Putting on a birthday frolic for your little one can be a pressure-laden task. You want them to remember it forever (admit it), but you don’t want to go over the top with hired help and $20 loot bags. Start with the cake and follow some of our savvy suggestions that will help keep the ‘happy’ in ‘birthday’ and the ‘cake’ in ‘cake’.
Candles are a must, but everything else is optional when it comes to the birthday dessert.
Keep It Small
Excitement and small tummies often result in half-finished slices of cake. Avoid waste and get instant oooohs and ahhhhs by serving up a selection of tasty and gorgeous mini cupcakes instead. Visit the Cupcakes location nearest you (Edgemont Village location coming soon too) and pick a selection in different colours and flavours. (Yes, you may be forced to test some out, for the sake of your child.) A dozen mini cupcakes are $10. If you are in the Fort Langley area, visit Tracycakes on Glover Road for multi-flavoured, lip-smacking frosted creations. Her “Babycakes” sell for $8.95/dozen.
Whip It Up
Is your party in the park? Forget the ice cream and put a can of whipped cream in the cooler instead.
Easy as Pie
Keep it light and luscious with a watermelon cake. Cut a two-inch cross-section from the middle of a seedless melon. Take the rind off, lay the disc on a plate and decorate it with whip cream and sprinkles. Add candles and voila!—an instant birthday cake.
The Show Stopper
If you want a fancy (and delicious) theme cake, put yourself in the floury, sugary, buttery hands of Jill Shumka of The Uncommon Cake. A cake artist extraordinaire, Jill will bring her eye for design and attention to detail to your party with her fantastic special occasion cakes. Prices start at $20 and delivery can even be arranged for $10.
Remember that some kids get overwhelmed with too much fuss and bother, and best-laid plans can end in tears (possibly yours). Focus on what’s important—the company of good friends and family, looking forward to new adventures in the year ahead and the cake, of course!.
