In charge of the Thanksgiving dinner this year? Don’t worry, you don’t have to wing it. We have a few Savvy suggestions that will have you counting your blessings, as you should.
Multi-purpose in Langley by combining your dinner shopping with a family outing. Visit the valley and pick up your medication-free, humanely raised turkey from J.D. Farms, and enjoy a tasty lunch in their new bistro with the kids. Next stop is to Aldor Acres to pick up some veggies, enjoy their petting zoo, and take a hayride to pick out your Halloween pumpkin (see, look how ahead of the game you’ll be).
Good to Know: When purchasing your turkey, plan on buying one pound per every adult guest, and half a pound for children. If you can’t make it out to the farm, check JD’s website for local retail outlets that carry their naturally raised birds.
If holiday pressures tend to have you screaming ‘stuff it!’ (and you’re NOT talking about the turkey), consider having your meal assembled by Sliced Tomatoes. Just think, you could open your door on Saturday, October 11 and find a full readied feast, from a seasoned, stuffed J.D. Farms turkey right through to the pumpkin pie, with delicious-sounding soup and sides along the way. For 12 guests, count on spending $260 for the complete meal; for 16 diners, you’ll pay $300.
Good to Know: Don’t you dare feel guilty about letting someone else be your sous-chef. If it means you can spend a holiday weekend day enjoying a family outing, it will be money well spent. (Your children will remember you for your time, not your thyme!)
Once you’ve fed everyone insanely well (and we know you will), you won’t have to worry about the excess calorie intake if you take part in the Vancouver Turkey Trot, now celebrating 10 years. What makes this 10K run different? For starters, the ‘tot trot’ is a designated family-friendly category that means moms with strollers can easily manage the flat course that starts at Granville Island and wraps around False Creek. We also love the attractive and functional long-sleeve Puma racing shirt that comes with your registration, the high-quality apres-run posh-nosh by author/chef Stephen Wong, and the unbeatable scenery you’ll enjoy along the way.
Good to Know: The run is limited to 2,000 participants and has often sold out, so be sure to register in advance. (You’ll save $10 that way, too. Why not contribute it to the Vancouver Food Bank, the Turkey Trot’s charitable partner?)
But what’s really savvy is learning to appreciate every day of the year, and passing on that sense of gratitude to our children. So from our house to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!
