Moms to Meet

Gone are the days when joining a moms’ group meant sitting in a church basement, singing Old MacDonald and swapping diaper rash stories.

Many of today’s mothers are also looking for some of the inspiration they used to get from the people at work or on campus. In Metro Vancouver, we’re getting that from two enterprises that are making sure moms have the chance to talk about ‘grown-up’ topics over lattes and non-Cheerio-based snacks.

Momcafé has only been around since September, but founder and mom Jill Earthy has already figured out how to keep both moms and offspring well-entertained at the monthly events. While moms enjoy breakfast and interesting guest speakers, babies and toddlers are playing with Natural Pod toys under the watchful eye of staff from Nannies on Call, and older siblings are creating up a storm in the Art Express bus parked outside the restaurant.

Speakers present on a variety of topics, and you don’t have to be a business mom to benefit, though there is plenty of information offered to those women who have plans to join the fast-growing mom entrepreneur club. You can attend as a guest (men welcome, too, as are women without children), or become a momcafé member and receive discounts and other benefits. Events take place at restaurants in Vancouver or on the North Shore.

Enterprising Moms is a networking meet-up for moms who own their own business. Monthly meetings take place in the evenings, when kids are safely in bed, and feature presenters such as Karen McGregor, who will be talking on the Power of Public Speaking at the May meeting in White Rock.

This month they are celebrating the launch of a new Enterprising Moms chapter in Richmond/South Vancouver. The event will take place on May 22 at the Best Western Inn on Bridgeport Road; as with all EMN meetings, the first one is free. An annual membership fee for those who choose to join covers the 10 yearly events, a newsletter, and promotional opportunities for members’ businesses.

EMN’s highlight of the year is its Vancouver Enterprising Moms Event on Sunday, June 8, where guests will have the chance to hear success stories such as those from Jen Casey, founder of Dimpleskins Naturals, Cybele Negris, founding partner of Webnames.ca, and singer-songwriter Lee Aaron. All attendees will have the chance to win a mentoring evening and dinner with Sandra Wilson, founder of Robeez baby shoes.

It gives a whole new meaning to the term “mommy brain” (and it sure beats sitting in a circle on the floor).
