Out of the Park

Vancouver Canadians’ Games
Take Dad (and the kids) out to the ball game all summer long. Find out more.

Already missing the Canucks? Keep that sporting spirit alive at the Vancouver Canadians’ opening festivities this weekend, as the C’s kick their season off with five home games in a row (seriously, it’s June - it’s time to get off the ice).

The Vancouver Canadians’ minor league baseball franchise has been a fixture at Nat Bailey Stadium for years, but the news you can use is that this truly is a family fun place, perfect for young kids. Beyond the baseball game, there is a supervised children’s play area (for kids up to age 12), complete with bouncy castle, inflatable slide, obstacle course and baseball activities, where you can drop the kids off (after admission is paid) so you can watch the game. There is also a ‘Rookie Team’ program, which costs $25 for the season for one child (or $50 for a family) and includes admission to every Sunday and Monday home game during the season, a fast-pass for front-of-the-line privileges during Family Fun Sunday games, and a post-game option to ‘run the bases’ on Sundays or join in for a player ‘meet and greet’ on Mondays.

Fireworks are also relatively regular after weekend evening games (including this Friday and Saturday). Family Fun Sunday matinee games include giveaways for kids under 12 (batting gloves, bats, T-shirts and more) and there is a much-loved mascot named Bob Brown Bear. Also, be sure to check out the option of hosting a larger group ‘BBQ Picnic in the Park’ or even your next birthday party there.

As a bonus, C’s tickets are inexpensive (kids under three are free and there are plenty of promotional and group discounts) and Sunday matinee game times make it easier for younger kids to attend. Plus, you get to see future major league stars in the making.

Good to Know: Although you could splurge on front row tickets, remember that if you’re attending a matinee game, everyone will be sitting in the sun, and the cheaper grandstand seats might be better for minimizing sun exposure.

And if Nat Bailey stadium is not in your local ‘hood, then head over early for a swim at the new Hillcrest pool right next door, with both indoor and outdoor splashing options.

This Father’s Day weekend, take the family out to the ‘ol’ ball game’ for some old-fashioned fun. It’ll definitely be a home run gift. Tested by Michelle T., Vancouver
