Staying Dry

Rainy Day Round-up
Staying Dry

It’s tough getting through the winter when the weather is more neurotic than we are. Fear not, we have found a great product to keep you laughing (or at least smiling) through the rain and a new program to help you enjoy some light-hearted culture indoors with your family.

With the help of Cheeky Umbrella, you can now smile every time you open your personal shelter. Cheeky Umbrella was started by a North Vancouverite this past summer, and is quickly making umbrellas a fashion accessory. Owner Jen Zurowski creates umbrellas that are intended to make light of a dark day. The designs are fun and funky, with bright colourful patterns on black backgrounds, and each has a unique saying scrolled along the inside. Choose from such wit as “When does it start raining men?” or “It’s raining, it’s pouring, other umbrellas are boring”. We like that these umbrellas are made to stand up to the elements, with strong lightweight frames and fiberglass wind-resistant ribs and a slip-resistance hook handle that allows you to hang them on doorknobs when not in use.
Savvy Special: Cheeky Umbrella is offering SavvyMom readers 10% off the regular $40 price when you enter the code SAVVYMOM until January 30 at www.cheekyumbrella.com.

Even with all the cheeky shelter, you might still be looking for an indoor activity, and we have just the thing. The Vancouver Art Gallery (VAG) is debuting brand new family programming in February designed to make art fun for all ages. Starting on Saturday, February 7, the VAG will dedicate every Saturday afternoon and two Sunday afternoons per month to this brand new programming (replacing Super Sundays, the current once a month family program). Every Saturday afternoon from 12 – 4 pm, Art Agents and Art Tracks programs will allow kids to discover art in ways that resonate with them, including tours led by artists, storytellers, musicians and scientists. Every other Sunday afternoon from 12 – 4 pm, The Making Place will allow kids to create their own art through workshops that include both collaborative and independent activities.

All of these new family programs are included with your daily admission or annual membership. Admission is $17.50 for adults, $7 for kids 5 – 12 years of age, and free for kids 4 and under. Family rates are $47 for a family of four. The real deal is the annual family membership for $90, which includes two adults and a maximum of three kids 18 years of age and under.

So, grab your Cheeky Umbrella and make your way to the VAG. You can stay nice and dry on your way to creative brilliance.
