Consider the ecological footprint of a plastic fork at your child’s party. It’s made from oil in a fossil-burning factory and then packaged in plastic (yes, oil again). The fork devours fossil fuels as it is shipped, trucked and then driven to your house where it is used just once. After that, it’s tossed and carted off to live out the rest of its long life in a massive landfill. And that’s just the fork. We collectively cringe at the eco-toll of our festivities, but the party must go on, right? 

Not so fast, Party Queen. A local, green-minded business, Green Planet Parties, has come to our eco rescue with earth-friendly solutions for every item on your party checklist. 

Green Planet Parties (GPP) was started just over a year ago by two eco-friendly Vancouver moms who saw lots of waste around them at their children’s parties and set their minds to providing families with sustainable party supplies at competitive prices. Their online business now specializes in eco-friendly, locally produced gifts, biodegradable tableware, reusable decorations and green loot bags. Much of their merchandise is nature inspired, like their Wildlife Pencil Crayons, and offers a great opportunity to teach the next generation about being good to our planet. While GPP’s entire product line has us keen to revamp our party planning, a few items deserve a special mention. 

Loot bags epitomize our struggle to stretch a buck but not be wasteful…try that at the local dollar store. GPP solves our loot bag dilemma with the mere click of a mouse. Their pre-made loot bags feature funky reusable cloth drawstring bags with different sustainable items to choose from, like a DIY wooden fairy wand to decorate or a wooden earth yo-yo. Being experienced moms, the ladies at GPP know to include the pièce de résistance of the loot bag, a yummy sweet, which is also eco-themed. Depending on your selections, this convenient and green solution can cost about the same as its polluting counterpart (without the trip to the dollar store or the midnight bag stuffing). 

With Hallowe’en around the corner, we couldn’t help but notice GPP’s sensible and well-priced cloth trick-or-treat bags. These spooky bags glow in the dark (cool for kids) and double up as a safety sac (cool for moms). They won’t easily rip, can be used year after year and close tight with a drawstring for that sprint from door to door. Most important, they are big enough for a decent haul.
