The female nesting instinct doesn’t disappear with pregnancy. From the moment we first hold our babe until the day we hand over the car keys, we aspire to provide a healthy home for our offspring.
Ironically, most of the health dangers we seek to avoid are found under our own roofs. From arsenic to formaldehyde (hello, cozy cushions and plush carpet), apparently there’s a toxic soup brewing in our kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms and playrooms.
But researching and solving the chemical conundrum in our homes can be a tall order, and thankfully for Van moms, we have Mamamaven. Known as Tanis Frame in her private life, Mamamaven, the great keeper of green home and family information, has become an expert out of necessity on matters relating to children’s environmental health.
As a mom of two youngsters, armed with a science degree and background in research, toxicology, risk assessment and environmental health, this savvy business woman (and environmental consultant) is now the go-to gal for cutting through to the green when it comes to our pack and den.
At her various workshops, Mamamaven decodes the green wash that overwhelms most of us and delivers the lowdown on the real toxic risks surrounding our clan (smiling and joking all the while). She’ll give you the straight goods on things like green cleaners that really clean, toxin-fighting house plants, fragrance-free fresh smells and other air-purifying tricks, cloth versus disposable nappies, and practical rules beyond zero tolerance for plastic. Moreover, Tanis is loaded with how-to info to help parents execute their green objectives, such as brand names, suppliers, stores, discounts and deals.
We love that Tanis takes these workshops on the road to nurseries and daycares in an effort to expand our kids’ collective clean bubble, and even better, Mamamaven makes house calls. You can host a ‘greening’ party in your own home for your chums and get hands-on advice from Tanis (plus lots of samples!) about the small changes that will have the biggest impact on your eco-vironment.
Even in the green world, it’s not what you know, but who you know that counts.
