The Spring Scene

Spring Break Theatre Productions
Add some drama to your Spring Break at one of these kid-friendly shows.

Prologue
It’s a dark and stormy day during Spring Break in Vancouver and the kids are climbing the walls. Mom walks in flourishing tickets to a fun kids’ show. The kids squeal with delight. Entire cast exits stage right.

The lights come up to an empty stage—the plot thickens…which show (or shows) has Mom chosen for the three and up audience?

Act One
Scene One

The kids are excited to check out the delightful puppetry and story telling in Mermaid Theatre’s production Swimmy, Frederick & Inch by Inch. Based on the books by Leo Lionni and co-presented by Carousel Theatre and Axis Productions, the show runs March 5 and 6 at the Norman Rothstein Theatre.

Scene Two
Our characters take a jaunt over to Granville Island to see Carousel Theatre’s always-popular Munscha Mia! show. This fun-filled play features music based on familiar and new stories by beloved Canadian author Robert Munsch and runs from March 5 to 27.

Scene Three
Mom packs everyone up to visit the Evergreen Cultural Centre in Coquitlam for a great line-up and some post-show workshops to let you make a day of it! The Little Old Man is a unique puppet show performed with the companion piece Hansel and Gretel. Also on stage is The Big Sneeze (suitable for ages five and up), which uses humour to tell the story of a tall girl who wants to be invisible. The shows run from March 22 to 25.

Scene Four
Off the Drive, the whole fam heads to The Cultch, home to the unique theatre piece Darwin the Dinosaur with larger-than-life characters lighting up the stage. Matinees are March 12 and 13 with evening performances.

Scene Five
Downtown at The Centre in Vancouver for the Performing Arts, everyone is excited to see the Royal Winnipeg Ballet presenting Wonderland from March 24 to 27. Older kids will go ‘mad’ for the amazing costumes and daring dancing as they follow Alice down the rabbit hole!

Intermission
(Because the kids are letting all this wonderful drama sink in, and Mom needs a break from chauffeuring everyone around.)

Act Two
Scene One

The kids are now clamouring for acting lessons so they can take centre stage (as though they don’t already!).

Scene Two
Mom finds a new ‘triple threat’ (singing, acting and dancing) program for six to nine year-olds offered downtown at Blue Egg Studios (classes for two to six year-olds are in the works). She also notes that Stagecraft Theatre School starts its next sessions for kids in April.

Epilogue
Mom takes a bow, the kids clap and that’s a wrap!
