Reality check: the holidays are almost here, and to ensure we actually enjoy the season, a few advance plans are necessary. A trip to the theatre is a great family tradition. So for a family-friendly experience that is high on the enjoyment factor for kids of all ages, and easy on the pocketbook, here are our top picks.
Go to the Goh
The 30-year old Goh Ballet Academy, under the new direction of savvy mom and National Ballet of Canada’s former Prima Ballerina, Chan Hon Goh (daughter of the founders), is presenting one of the most popular family ballets, The Nutcracker, for a second season. A fantastical journey through the Land of Snow, Sweets, and the Sugar Plum Fairy, The Nutcracker is a classic holiday themed event that is great for all ages.
Good to Know: For younger children, there are two weekend matinee performances.
(December 16–19 at The Centre in Vancouver for the Performing Arts, tickets start at $28)
Ride the Carousel
If your family likes musicals, Seussical the Musical, at the 36-year old Carousel Theatre, is sure to appeal. A condensed version of the Broadway show specifically tailored for young audiences, this musical interweaves time-honoured Dr. Seuss stories with songs, props, and storylines. Characters include Horton, Jo-Jo, Cat in the Hat, and even a cameo from the Grinch.
Good to Know: For children under three, check out the two Baby and Me Sunday morning performances.
(December 4–January 1, tickets are $29 for adults and $15 for children)
Get Some Cultch
For a night out without kids, the Vancouver East Cultural Centre’s performance of The Christmas Carol Project might fit the bill. This version of Dickens’ classic tale, a long-running, popular Edmonton show performed by Juno-nominated folk musicians, is debuting this December in Vancouver. If you haven’t experienced the 37-year old ‘Cultch’, then this is an opportunity to see how elements of the old church have been restored in the recently renovated Historic Theatre.
Good to Know: The show is family-friendly and would appeal to older children.
(December 17–18, tickets start at $36)
Now item five on the list—entertaining the troops—is checked off that list. Supporting long-standing, local arts institutions is just the icing on the holiday cake.
