Some might equate bowling with bad footwear, but we enjoy it because it brings together families and friends of all ages for some (indoor) active fun.
We also groove to the new concept of glow-in-the-dark bowling. That’s where the regular lights get dimmed, and disco lights and music combine for a ‘cosmic’ experience (totally rad).
North Shore Bowl is hip to the trend and is a great place to take the kids on a rainy weekend afternoon. If you have beginner bowlers, be sure to ask for bumpers on the lanes to avoid too many gutter balls. Then sit back and watch the tikes score some spares and strikes!
Kids love this place for celebrating birthdays because of the unique glow party room. Moms love it because the food set-up and clean-up are included in the price.
The same kind of retro revival is in full swing at Varsity Ridge Bowl in Vancouver where the fluorescent glow gets everyone in a good mood. They also host birthday parties, and even have a bowling league for kids ages 4 to 14.
If you want to enjoy a more modern experience, then try 10-pin bowling at REV’s in Burnaby. We like the computerized scoring system and the large number of lanes. You can also enjoy food and drinks from the lounge while you play. They even kick it up a notch on Friday and Saturday nights with video cosmic bowling.
Good to Know: Some of the videos may not be suitable for the younger set. We recommend the family special on Saturday afternoons where it’s $40 for 90 minutes of bowling, including shoes. Not cosmic, but still fun!
REV’s in Maple Ridge is the perfect place for a family outing with 5-pin cosmic bowling (minus the videos) starting at 6 pm Friday and Saturday nights, and all afternoon on Sundays. Call ahead to reserve your lanes if you have a large group.
Out at The Zone Bowling Centre in Coquitlam and Richmond, cosmic bowling is offered from 4 to 6 pm on Friday nights for kids ages 5 and up. They also have on-site restaurants.
So pack up the gang and head to your local alley (bowling, that is). We guarantee the good times will get rolling in no time!
Note: Make sure to wear socks (you need them to rent the shoes) and white clothing so you can glow in the dark.
