Vancouver: The Savvy Guide to September

September 2009
Back to School Chalkboard

Brace yourself because it’s just about that time. September brings with it the end of summer (sigh) and the promise of a new year, new shoes and maybe a new haircut. You’re armed with your savvy back-to-reality checklist but you might need a few more tricks up your sleeve for the rest of this month. Here’s our savvy guide to September.

DO
Pack a picnic—and then go on one with your family
Why? Because the weather is still nice outside even if the official summer months are over. (And just in case you didn’t fit one in all summer, you still can.)

GO
To a mom-only event at Heritage Hall on Main Street
Why? Because there are two great events there over one weekend. On Saturday, September 18, Mom’s Night Out provides moms with a relaxing opportunity to shop, enjoy wine, food, live music and get your hair and make up done. On September 19, Mommies on Main, in its second year, celebrates local and Canadian inspired clothing, accessories and products for moms and kids.

GET
A big family calendar
Why? Because it helps to have one central schedule that everyone can see—kids, parents and caregivers.

PLAY
Olly Olly Oxen Free
Why? Because it’s really a simple game of hide-and-seek but it’s fun to say the words. Just shout out “Olly Olly Oxen Free” when the person who is it finds someone and wants to call everyone home to start again.

READ
The Organized Parent by Christina Baglivi Tinglof (mother of three boys)
Why? Because we all need a little help from time to time.

SURF
www.sharing-books.com
Why? Because it’s a wonderful resource where you can download kids’ books, while also supporting new authors and children’s literacy programs.

GREEN IT
Look for recyclable eco-friendly products to pack the kids’ lunch items in this year rather than using disposable plastic baggies
Why? Because taking or buying a disposable lunch every day creates a total of 30 kg of waste per person every year (and that’s about the weight of a grade two student). It can also save you time and money.

HELP
Raise money for cancer research on September 13 by participating in the 29th annual Terry Fox Run in your local community
Why? Because Terry Fox’s original Marathon of Hope had a goal to raise enough funds to find a cure for cancer, and to date this organization has raised over $400 million, with at least 87 cents of every dollar raised going to cancer research.
