A Day in the Bay

Exploring Cowichan Bay
You’ll be hooked on this little fishing village in no time.

With lots of time still left in the summer, you might be looking for a day trip to get away—but not too far away.

Just less than one hour from Victoria is the sleepy village of Cowichan Bay, the perfect place for a day trip. Arrive on an empty stomach, because as well as being a great seaside village to explore, bike, hike, rent a kayak, whale watch or relax, this area is quickly becoming known for its gastronomic delights as the centre of the slow-food movement on Vancouver Island.

Head towards Duncan and follow the exit signs off the Island Highway to Cowichan Bay Village, then drive 10 minutes on a farmland road until you reach the village on the water. Walk the docks, see the local fisherman bringing in their catch, buy some dinner and let your kids try their luck at fishing off the docks (note: remember to bring your rods).

For lunch, there are many shops to choose from—here are some of our favorites:

True Grain Bread is an organic bakery that mills their own flour on site to produce the best bread on the island. Local and organic ingredients are used, and traditional bread-making techniques make this a fascinating stop for adults and kids, where they can see first-hand, the process of making delicious artisan bread.

Hilary’s Artisan Cheese Shop makes their own cheese on site and imports the rest from the best producers all over the world. Their deli makes fresh soups each day and sandwiches to eat in or take away.

Udder Guy’s Ice Cream is island ice cream at its best. Adults (with sophisticated palettes) can feast on unique flavors like candied ginger and rum-soaked raisin, while the kids lick away at blackberry or strawberry, made with local berries. Don’t forget to pack an empty cooler to bring some home.

You will drive home over the Malahat with satisfied, tired, full kids, and probably some leftover delights for your fridge.
