An Ancient Chinese Secret

Silk Road Tea House
Take a sip of something special and silky smooth.

In November, the days get shorter and the list gets longer. There never seems to be enough time, let alone ‘you’ time—we know. But there is solace in knowing that Silk Road is a little gem you can visit this month where ‘you’ can warm up with some tea and tranquility and start your holiday planning, too.

Located just outside the Gates of Chinatown on Government Street, this tea emporium started in 1992 by two women whose aim was to share their knowledge of the ancient benefits and traditions of tea with the Victoria population. We love the welcoming atmosphere at Silk Road. As soon as you walk in, you’re handed a warm sampling of tea and a smile. We also love the range of gifts here—from uniquely beautiful mugs to an antique teapot or a magnificently scented cream.

Silk Road now sells over 100 types of traditionally prepared tea leaves, and all the amenities that go with it. The tea is displayed in metal tins in a ‘scoop yourself’ style. They also sell take-home recipe kits, with how-to instructions for iced tea, tea-infused cocktails and our favorite, Earl Grey Chocolate Truffles. An in-store tea bar offers tea tastings with an educated tea expert to answer all your brewing questions and to teach you about the many beneficial health ingredients in each cup. Don’t forget to pick up a 2011 calendar when you’re there as they offer many workshops throughout the year that make for the perfect afternoon outing with a friend.

Silk Road also has a complete aromatherapy section with 100% natural products that are made in house—shampoo, conditioner, lovely scented Epsom salts, creams and facial kits. The downstairs spa has a full range of treatments—making it the perfect gift for a friend, sister or your mom. Sweeten that gift and spend time at the spa with her (for some more ‘you’ time, as well).

So take a trip to Chinatown for a sip at Silk Road. Your day will go smooth as silk.
