For the Birds

The Pacific Northwest Raptor Centre
Soar into a new adventure this summer with the kids. View more here.

Childhood memories are made during family time outside, exploring and learning in nature. So if you’re looking for ways to create those memories, drive eight minutes off the TransCanada Highway in Duncan to a bird of prey sanctuary. It’s a must-visit for your family this summer.

Set against the backdrop of the beautiful Cowichan Valley, The Pacific Northwest Raptor Centre is a unique interactive attraction that is dedicated to the education and conservation of birds of prey. Eagles, hawks, falcons, vultures, owls and other birds fly free each day from the centre, making for spectacular close-up encounters with these magnificent creatures. The dedicated and well-informed staff lead tours to help your family learn all about the birds. Picnic tables and washrooms top off the adventure nicely with some space for a packed lunch (but be careful not to get your sandwich pecked).

Programs and walks vary in time depending on the age of your kids; the Hawk Walk, Owl Prowl and Kookaburra Encounter are short, 15-minute introductions to the birds, while there are half and full-day programs for older kids as well. The flying demonstrations showcase the stellar flight skills and aerial agility of the raptors. Imagine the look on your kids’ faces as they watch a bald eagle soaring above, only to land on a perch beside the audience!

The grounds have a pond, a trail system and lots of space to explore and watch the birds in action. The Raptor Centre offers a wide range of summer camps, birthday party hosting and even a special discounted Father’s Day admission price for Dad. We think it would make an ideal family outing.

Whether it’s a picnic lunch and short walk in the forest, or a summer camp experience, getting so close to these amazing creatures will be an adventure never to be forgotten. Tested by Barb C., Victoria
