Victoria: The Savvy Guide to October

October 2010
There’s more to October than turkey and treats!

This month is all about giving thanks and giving candy. There really isn’t a lot to complain about if you look at it that way. Here’s our check list for making sure you get (and give) the most out of this month.

DO
Get your Halloween costume and/or accessories soon.
Why? Because all the good ones sell out early. Trust us, we’ve made ghost costumes from old sheets enough times to learn that lesson. Watch out for next week’s Halloween Guide that’s filled with lots of inspiration.

GO
To the CRD Parks for the free weekend nature series, open to all ages.
Why? It’s a great way to discover new parks in and around Victoria (before the rain sets in) while learning interesting facts about the creatures that live in them.

GET
Winter boots for the kids. Soon.
Why? Because it’s best to be prepared for when the weather turns quickly. We love these new boots from Kazo Shoes because with every purchase, $10 goes toward children’s charities in Ethiopia and China. They’re also really cute.

PLAY
Peek-A-BOO (or hide and seek). Let the kids dress up in their Halloween costume and hide. Then they have to yell BOO when you find them. For older kids, let them hide inside and out. For younger children, set boundaries so they don’t go too far or let them hide with an older sibling/friend.
Why? It’s a classic game with an easy Halloween twist. Kids love when their parents have to come and find them—no matter what the age.

READ
Mom, Will This Chicken Give Me Man Boobs?: My Confused, Guilt-Ridden, and Stressful Struggle to Raise a Green Family by Robyn Harding
Why? Because it’s a funny and honest account of a real mom who is trying her best to raise her family in an eco-friendly manner (but it’s not easy).

SURF
www.zisboombah.com
Why? Because it’s a fun and different way to learn about food without letting the kids know that they are actually learning about food.

GREEN IT
This is the month to get your furnace serviced. For those of you with forced air, you’ll want to clean out the filters. For those of you with rads, let them bleed.
Why? It will be cold one night and you’ll want the heat on, but you’ll also want to run your furnace at optimal efficiency all winter.

APP IT
www.onceuponanapp.com
Why? It’s a great way for your kids to read the old school stories we grew up with in a new world medium. Kids love the games and moms love the beautiful graphics.

HELP
Participate in the Goodlife Fitness Victoria Marathon on Thanksgiving weekend.
Why? There are many activities for the whole family to partake in. Sign your kids up for the 1.2 km race on Sunday, October 10 and you will be contributing to 18 local charities.

DEAL IT
Enjoy 10% off everything at You Name It Baby for the month of October. Use code SAVVYDEAL.
Why? Because it’s the perfect way to buy lovely and useful items while saving yourself from more labelling efforts as your child’s name is already beautifully embroidered on them!
