What to Watch

As if getting the kids to bed during the school year isn’t hard enough. The summer, with its late sunsets and enticing warm weather, makes maintaining bedtime almost impossible! Don’t fight the night; dedicate one evening a week to these family outdoor adventures.

Turn a midsummer night’s dream into reality by taking in the Shakespearean play, A Winter’s Tale at the Dream in High Park. This west-end outdoor theatre is surrounded by free parking. If you decide to take the ‘better way’, it’s a quick walk south of the High Park subway station. Operated by Canadian Stage, Dream in High Park raises the curtain every Tuesday to Sunday at 8 pm through September 4. With their pay-what-you-can policy ($20 is suggested), Canadian Stage asks little in return for an outstanding performance. For an earlier production, visit the stage every Sunday from 5 to 6:30 pm, when the program offers free backstage tours, the opportunity to meet cast members and workshops for all ages.

We’re lucky to have Harbourfront, especially when they play host to several activities for children. A perfect example is Longo’s Free Flicks. Held every Sunday until August 9 on the WestJet Stage, this free show is almost effortless to get to. With this year’s theme, City Flicks (each film is set in a different city around the world), movies like Amal and Lost in Translation are on the bill. While there are plenty of seats (1500 to be exact), we recommend getting there early to enjoy the view of Lake Ontario, browse specialty shops, and marvel at street performers along the well-maintained boardwalk.

Aren’t summer block parties the best? Add watching movies outside and a great charity to support and you’ve got Movies in the Park. Held Sunday July 24, August 14 and August 21 in Riverdale Park East, families gather to watch fun films like Edward Scissorhands and Best in Show. Admission is free, but you’re encouraged to donate to one of the supported children’s charities. Bring a picnic and a blanket or camping chairs, and you’re set to be entertained.

This summer, embrace your inner creature-of-the-night and head to the movies for a different kind of outdoor fun. And don’t forget the popcorn. Tested by Caroline P., Toronto
