Ottawa: The Savvy Guide to October

SavvyMom November 28, 2016

Turkey and treats…that’s what we think about when October comes around. It’s a great month for giving thanks and trick-or-treating. Here’s our guide to getting the most out of this super-sized month.

Take the kiddos to a farm for some apple and pumpkin picking fun
Why? Because what’s cuter than a kid in a pumpkin patch? It’s the perfect photo-op-and-fresh-air activity.

To Pumpkinferno at Upper Canada Village from October 3–November 1
Why? Because this hauntingly beautiful and spellbinding outdoor exhibit features close to 6,000 hand-carved pumpkins, all glowing against a stirring night-time backdrop—perfect to get your family into the Halloween spirit. (From Our Partner: St. Lawrence Parks)

Your own Halloween costume sorted early
Why? Because you can’t really get away with not having a costume these days—so you may as well decide on something you like and be prepared for it. Your kids will love you for dressing up, too.

Squash bowling this Thanksgiving with the family. Set up five or ten butternut squash in bowling pin formation (just make sure they have levelled bottoms and will stand upright on the ground). Use a round pumpkin—stem removed—as the bowling ball.
Why? We’ve never had more fun playing with our food.

Sweet Dreams: 5-Minute Bedtime Stories
Why? Because these tales are beautifully illustrated and only five minutes long—perfect for smaller kids (and tired parents) who can’t make it through a whole bedtime story without falling asleep.

Why? Because this newly launched blog is all about modern family life—the good and the bad of the everyday, and the big issues that families face. It also recognizes—and celebrates—that there is no one way to be a family.

Why? It will help you beat cold and flu season this year by keeping you on top of outbreaks in your area, so you know where you should avoid taking the kids.

Prepare your garden for winter before first frost
Why? Because a few simple preparations now will mean that your garden bounces back beautifully after the winter.

One of these five apple decor projects for fall
Why? They’re simple, easy, natural, and they look fab.

Operation Christmas Spirit by attending their Charity Fun Day on Saturday October 4 from 4–7 pm
Why? Because you’ll help a family in need put gifts under the tree, and the kids will love the pony rides, petting zoo, face painting and more.
