How to Do Canada Day in Calgary
When it comes to Canada Day celebrations, Calgary is tops. So be sure to pack up the water bottles, sunscreen, hats and snacks for a fun family day. Here are some great ways to take in our national birthday celebration.
-
Prince’s Island Park
Why we like it: Aside from being the perfect picnic spot, there are two great events to enjoy at Prince's Island Park. The First Nations Powwow runs the full day and lets visitors explore native heritage through storytelling, dancing, drumming and more, hosted by Bow Valley College's Iniikokaan Aboriginal Centre. Then, wearing your red and white, head to the Living Flag by Calgary AfterSchool to join in a giant photo, happening from 11 am to 12 pm. The first 3,000 people to take part receive a free t-shirt.
-
Eau Claire Market
Why we like it: Aside from the awesome display of local entertainment—including magicians, jugglers, face painting and other activities for kids—there is also a splash pad on hand for spontaneous cooling off. Plus, with washrooms and food trucks nearby, it's a perfect spot to celebrate. Did we mention the free ice cream for the first 1,000 celebrators?
-
Calgary Stampede Canada Day and Harry the Horse Birthday Bash
Why we like it: Olympic Plaza is always a great place to celebrate on Canada Day, and this year the celebration includes the 30th Birthday of Calgary Stampede's furry mascot, Harry. Aside from the usual stage entertainment, fun booths and photo ops, at 1:30 pm there will be birthday cake for the first 2,000 people. We say ‘yee haw' to that!
-
Dominion Day at Heritage Park
Why we like it: Celebrating Canada's history and the present at Heritage Park is a Calgary tradition. Aside from the regular park activities, there will also be a pancake breakfast, parade, BBQ picnic, live entertainment, classic picnic games for the kids and mini-chuckwagon races from noon to 5 pm.
-
East Village Street Fair
Why we like it: If you're the type that likes to stroll and take in the sights, and you have Lightning McQueen fans in the house, then check out the East Village Street Fair and Show ‘n' Shine—there will be a multitude of cool cars to check out. The fair displays the works of various local artisans and there will be performances by local musicians, and an interactive children's area. (Read: mom and kids are both happy!)
-
Canada Day at Fort Calgary
Why we like it: Fort Calgary is another fave go-to place for Canada Day. Its wide open space means lots of room to move and run around despite crowds, and the day includes a free pancake breakfast, a children's area, petting zoo and (car lovers celebrate!) a Show ‘n' Shine. There's even the chance to dress up like a Mountie. Get ready to salute!
-
Food Truck Round Up
Why we like it: If food is what meets your fancy for Canada Day, take in some truck fare. Always a popular choice, you'll find the trucks between YMCA and Eau Claire. Be sure to bring your appetite. Pack a blanket, find a spot to park the family, and indulge in a multitude of delicious treats. Remember to bring cash—aside from being faster, not all the trucks accept cards.
