Our Ottawa Winter Family Activity Bucket List
As we enter a new year, it's the perfect time to make plans and try something new in the city. Our New Year's resolution is to be a tourist in our own city and take advantage of all the fantastic family-friendly activities Ottawa has to offer. Here's what's on our bucket list this winter.
-
Try Rock Climbing
Is being more active on your resolution list? Is so, you'll want to take the family to Altitude Gym. This indoor rock climbing gym is bringing adventure to new heights in Gatineau. Look for their special evening rates and put yourself to the challenge.
-
Go for a Skate
If your family is sharpening their skates in preparation of the season, then add the Lansdowne Skating Park to your list of rinks to visit. Bring your own skates and make a day of it by walking around all of the shops and restaurants that Lansdowne has to offer when you are done.
-
Diefenbunker
Did you know the Diefenbunker Cold War Museum is open year round? Step back in time, (and into the depths of the Earth), when you visit this historic underground bunker. Good to know: Visit their website for details on special events and birthday party planning opportunities.
-
Rideau Hall
Rideau Hall is a winter wonderland this time of year. While public tours are available only by reservation in January, the grounds remain open to the public. The skating rink is open on the weekends from noon until 5 pm and you won't want to miss the Winter Celebration activities on January 28 where you and your family can try out some Nordic sports and traditions.
-
The Agriculture and Food Museum
The Agriculture and Food Museum remains open during the winter and is the perfect place to bundle up the little ones and visit the farm animals or walk through the grounds in the snow. The Museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays but during the rest of the week, visitors can get a peek into winter life on the farm. Good to know: There is free admission between 4 pm and 5 pm.
-
The War Museum
The War Museum has a lot to offer families who are interested in learning more about Canada's war history and peace keeping efforts. With special exhibitions that are currently running like Vikings and Women in War, the entire family will be enthusiastic to learn more. Admission to regular exhibits is free on Thursdays from 4 pm to 8 pm.
-
Ottawa 67s
He shoots, he scores! The January schedule for the Ottawa 67s features a lot of fantastic rivalries. The 67s games are welcoming for kids of all ages and you can save on your tickets with a Family Pass or Kids Pass to multiple games!
-
Flapjack's Canadian Diner
A pancake is no longer just a pancake in this city thanks to Flapjacks. They've set up a shack at Concord St. station to feed happy Ottawaians breakfast all day long. Their sweet offerings will warm you up and make the kids flip out!
-
Tour Parliament Hill
How many of us live in Ottawa and haven't toured Parliament Hill yet? Year-round guided tours of the Centre Block are available. Learn more about Parliament and its history but be prepared for all the questions the kids will have! Free tickets are available.
-
Winterlude
Winterlude is a must during February in Ottawa! Skate on the world's largest skating rink, check out the ice sculpture competitions or play in North America's largest snow playground. Our favourite: the giant snow slides in the Snowflake Kingdom in Jacques-Cartier Park. It's also a great way to spend Family Day.
