Hillhurst Sunnyside Farmers Market
Running from May to the end of October at the Hillhurst Sunnyside Community Centre, this local outdoor rain-or-shine market comes with regular live music, fun for kids (read: bouncy castles and painted faces) and unique products that come with neighbourhood markets including specialty chutneys and other tasty fare. Its popularity led to expansion: now on Wednesday nights (3-7 pm), Saturdays (9:30 am-1:30 pm) Open May to October

DJ Market
Local veggies in full-on grassroots style (read: parking lot market in the SE), the DJ Market is about farm produce in a simplistic style. With BC and Alberta veggies and fruits, the prices make up for the lack of atmosphere. Check out the seasonal calendar [http://djmarket.ca/seasonal.html] to make sure they have what you need. So if you've got a big family gathering coming up, or some baking in the mix, it's worth a visit. Market runs May to November.

Constantly heading to the supermarket doesn't always feel so ‘super', especially when there's beautiful summer produce to be had at the local markets. This is the perfect time of year to pick up local farm produce and support an Alberta grower. From small neighbourhood spots to year-round options, these markets are sure to make their mark.

Calgary Farmers’ Market
Calgary Farmers' Market is much more than a simple shopping trip. You'll find a range of vendors selling everything from veggies, European and local meats, Canadian creations (tourtiere, Saskatoon berry pie), home baked goods, health products, organic foods, upcycled items and even treats for the family pet. The market also has an extensive international food court, but note that it's a very popular lunchtime option and can get crowded. Kids can run around in the barn-themed play area (but be sure to have socks on hand, it's a shoe-free zone. Socks can be purchased for a minimal fee as well). Before you set out for the day, check their event listings to see what's on—they're known for cool ones like cooking classes, food tours, and the upcoming Super Dad's Lounge on June 18. Open Thursdays to Sundays, 9 am-5 pm.

Market on Macleod
Formally known as the Kingsland Market, the Market on Macleod still delivers the goods. Artisanal foods sit side-by-side art and handmade goods, with a range of international flavours to explore. Dr. Seuss lovers (and moms who love trying something a little out of the ordinary) should visit Green Eggs & Ham to find real ‘green' eggs! Need to book in a haircut? Check out Jae's Street Salon retro trailer in the food court area. Miss P's Gluten Free offers everything from baked goods to lasagna and more. Plus, with the enclosed parking lot and outdoor eating area, there's lots of space for the kids to play (events have been known to include food trucks and bouncy houses). The Splash of Art event is a great opportunity to throw some culture into your weekend shop. Open Thursday to Sunday, 9 am-5 pm.

Crossroads Market
We love that this diverse spot comes with fleas—the market sort! Crossroads has recently revamped and expanded, and has a whole new range of cool offerings to explore from ready-to-heat treats, organic options and more including outdoor vendors in the summer. The international fare is truly authentic—Alatolia's Turkish Cuisine is not to me missed. Ukrainian, German, Indian, plus local goodies like Taber Corn (seasonal) and Rocky's Burger Bus (a great outdoor lunch if you're sticking around for a mid-meal). Once you've perused the food portion, be sure to go on a treasure hunt in the back part of the market where you'll find everything from retro toys, to collectables, fashions, jewellery, comics, DVDs, and even treasures for Mom. Make it a full event by enjoying a performance from Loose Moose Theatre, just around the corner. Friday to Sunday, 9 am-5 pm.

Symons Valley Ranch
Head out for some rustic fun year round—located in the outer NW, Symon's Valley Ranch has both regular and seasonal vendors, and is the only market of its kind in the area. Along with a great range of produce, cheese, meant and organic vendors, market events include the Lobster Boil in late June, Steak BBQ in August, and more. Be sure to stop by the bird pen with the kids to visit the peacocks and ducks! Open Friday to Sunday, 10 am- 5 pm

Bridgeland Riverside Farmers’ Market
An inner-city market, this is a great place to grab baked goods, preserves, pierogis, or other farm produce from the community hall after work. With an enviro-friendly bent, the market is currently looking for aspiring entrepreneurs and youth vendors—great initiative for older kids! Entertainment is also a part of the fun.

Calgary Grassroots Deerfoot Farmers’ Market
With over 40 vendors, you'll find diverse fare in the northeast parking lot. Veggies, meat, pizzas and even crafts—the market has been around since created by three women in 1992 to support environmental issues. Open Tuesdays from June 7-September 27, 3:30-7 pm

Wild Wild West Country Market
Nestled right next to Calaway Park, the Wild Wild West Country Market feels like a ‘wild west' experience, complete with the carriage rides, and the log house buildings. Sporting a fort-like structure, it allows kids to run around outdoors freely in the centre of the market (and enjoy the seasonal musical entertainment along with face painting opportunities), after you have perused the various vendors in the surrounding buildings. Not overwhelmingly large, it's a great family outing that offers quality shopping of all types, but has a Heritage Park vibe. Open June 25-September 10, 10 am-2 pm
