Our Low-Key Boxing Day Traditions

Our family Christmas is pretty relaxed. On Boxing Day we lay low and read the new books we've unwrapped and either go for a walk if the weather is mild or a skate if the lake behind our house is adequately frozen. The day after Boxing Day is when things get crazy—the extended family comes down and we have a double whammy celebration: the ‘Cousin Christmas', and the celebration of my parents' wedding anniversary (this year will be their 27th!).

My family spends the remaining days of the Christmas break winding down, getting lots of fresh air and having fun with family and friends. If the snow is good, we will be skiing as well as skating and playing hockey on our homemade rink on Nana and Grandpa's lake. I can't wait!

When we travel to Ireland for Christmas, a popular activity to do in Dublin is go to ‘the races' on Boxing Day. It's perfectly acceptable there to take the kids to the track and teach them how to bet on horses at an early age—Irish style. We love it, but have had no profits to report to date.

Our idea of a low-key day over the Christmas holidays is to spend an entire afternoon at the movies. Sometimes we see as many as three movies in one sitting. My dad gives the boys movie gift cards, so we put them to good use by seeing all the great blockbuster hits that come out this time of year.

Our traditional 'between Xmas and New Year's Eve' activity is to go skating with the kids and all of their cousins. We like to go to an outdoor rink near my in-laws and then go for hot chocolate afterwards.

December 26 happens to be very busy for my family as it's my middle daughter's birthday. It's a tough day to celebrate a birthday, but we do our best to corral friends and family out to make her day special. Activities have varied over the years from tobogganing and skating to booking a private spin class at our health club. Then we go back to our place for some chilli and cake.

Since we're so busy with extended family over the holidays, we decided to claim Christmas Eve and Boxing Day as our own. Christmas Eve has its own traditions, but Boxing Day is really where it's at. We spend the day in our PJs, the girls play with their new toys, then we all go out to dinner together. In the busy holiday season it is one of the days I look forward to the most.

Because I come from a blended family, the 48 hour Christmas bubble is spent at three different celebrations, with three different families (my dad's, my mom's and my stepdad's). That's why several years ago Boxing Day became a day of PJs, movies and board games with my mom, sister, stepdad and stepbrothers. For (a light) dinner, my mom puts together a DIY pizza bar with all of our favourite toppings. Now who said December 26th was meant to be spent in a mall?

My family meets in Winnipeg for Christmas. Since my kids and their cousins live in different cities, we like to maximize their time together. The day everyone lands, my sister hosts a gingerbread house making party, which keeps the kids busy while the adults enjoy some festive cheer.
