13 Shows Coming to Toronto this Winter
No worries, we thought. It's only October, we thought. There's plenty of time to research and plan for the amazing concerts, ice skating shows, lavish musicals and other kid-friendly entertainment about to grace our fair city. But those tickets are on sale now and folks are already snapping them up (in other words…they're going to sell out). So here they are—the best and most entertaining kid-friendly shows around, so that you can look at a calendar and buy now. Because that holiday break is two weeks long and family shows are a great remedy for cabin fever and too much screen time.

Nancy Kerrigan’s Halloween on Ice
Why not celebrate Halloween all week long with this ice skating spooktacular event? Kurt Browning and Johnny Weir join Nancy Kerrigan for cool costumes and routines set to Halloween-themed music. Pretty awesome for the kid who loves Halloween.
-
Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang
We read the book as kids. We saw the production as kids. And now we can take our kids to see the Intrepid Shapiro and the Fearless O'Toole, oh yah, and Jacob Two-Two as well, of course. YPT always does a bang-up job with their productions so book to see this one right away.
-
Fancy Nancy
Fans of the book series Fancy Nancy will love this new production. Lower Ossington Theatre has a knack for bringing kids' books to life just as they did with Pinkalicious, and this show will be casual fun for the whole family.
-
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Musical
Our favourite Christmas TV special is now a theatrical experience. The same look and feel and awesome songs are back (we can't wait to see the Abominable Snowman. And Yukon Cornelius. And the Island of Misfit Toys). Guess who's more exited, us or the kids…
-
Sleeping Beauty on Ice
This is more like the ballet Sleeping Beauty than Disney's take on the fairy tale and it certainly is beautiful. With tons of effects, a lovely score by Tchaikovsky and amazing ice dance moves, this is one for your ballet- or skating-obsessed little one.
-
Peter Pan
After 20 years, this is Ross Petty's last performance and he's going out with a bang. This Peter Pan musical pantomime promises to be great fun for parents and kids and full of great gags, costumes and overall hilarity.
-
Bubble Guppies
Yes, our kids adore the Bubble Guppies and are practically having kittens at the thought of seeing them on stage. Great as a kiddo's first live theatrical event, these shows know how to keep the action moving along, involve the audience, and end at just the right time.
-
Cinderella
This Rodgers and Hammerstein musical is sure to delight fans of the recent movie, Disney classic, and the fairy tale in general. The costumes are sumptuous, the story is well-loved and we're pretty sure they'll be spell-bound for the entire time.
-
The Phantom of the Opera
This is really best for older offspring, nephews or nieces, but what a show and thank goodness it is finally returning to Toronto. The music is amazing, the sets promise to be magical and the story is haunting. Really just gift this experience to a tween or teen so that you can attend as well—it's amazing.
-
A Christmas Circus
Cirque de la Symphonie members display their amazing skills set to the sounds of traditional Christmas carols as performed by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. The kids will be transfixed by the jugglers, contortionists, magical feats and sheer athleticism, not to mention the skill of the musicians. Fun for the eyes and the ears!
-
The Nutcracker
For many it is an annual holiday outing, for others, a tradition just waiting to happen. The Nutcracker embodies the excitement and magic of the holidays, especially for young kids, when nutcrackers can come to life and the Sugar Plum Fairy is the most beautiful and kind creature alive. Come early for story time and the kiddos will understand the plot and setting more fully.
-
Disney On Ice: Dare to Dream
Our favourite Disney princesses are at it again with this show that pays tribute to both classic and contemporary characters. From Tangled's Rapunzel (with our fave Flynn and Maximus the horse) to Snow White and the Seven Dwarves and then back to the Princess and the Frog, there is lotsa action and even more laughs.

Toruk First Flight by Cirque de Soleil
This new production by Cirque de Soleil is inspired by the movie Avatar, so we just know it's going to be out-of-this-world cool. Set on the distant moon of Pandora, the production takes place thousands of years before the setting of the film and imagines what happened then. Great for the imaginative, slightly older kiddos who have graduated from Treehouse characters.
