7 Kid-Friendly Sushi Restaurants in Vancouver

What says ‘Vancouver' more than sushi? (We are the sushi capital of North America, after all, with more than 600 sushi restaurants in Metro Vancouver). So, how do you choose? Don't fret. We've rounded up the best kid-friendly sushi restos in the city.

If your kiddos are just getting into sushi and you don't want to break the bank; or you're looking for value, there are plenty of sushi restaurants in Vancouver that offer sushi specials for under $10. Commercial Sushi at Commercial/Broadway is one of the best (three rolls and a miso soup for $7). Plus: TVs, intimate booths and friendly service.

Minami in Yaletown—hands down—has some of the best sushi in Vancouver. Don't be fooled by their chic interior—this restaurant is totally kid-friendly. There are always plenty of kiddos here. (They have a sushi-themed colouring page and a secret kids menu!) Don't feel left out grown-ups…they also have an extensive sake and cocktail list.

Miku, right by Canada Place, overlooking the ocean and mountains, is another restaurant with very high quality sushi. Miku, like Minami, specializes in ‘aburi' sear-flaming sushi (sit up or stand by the sushi bar for a few minutes to get a peek at the chefs searing the sushi with a blowtorch). This is pretty exciting for adults, never mind the kids.

Sushi Ville at Commercial/5th is a vibrant, bustling restaurant with plenty of families. For just an extra couple bucks you can ‘upsize' your sushi rolls to a ‘giant' roll. So, for an extra toonie, your kiddos favourite yam roll just tripled in size. It's not just a feast for the tummy, but for the eyes too: they serve most meals with dry ice in a decorative container

Hitoe Sushi in Kitsilano is one of the top-rated sushi restaurants in Vancouver. It's easy to see why: the food is fresh and the staff is friendly. They have an inexpensive kids menu too (everything from chicken teriyaki to udon noodles to sushi rolls, all for less than $7). Also, each bill comes with a packet of Pocky (chocolate-covered biscuit sticks).

Although a bit upscale, older kids will definitely love the RawBar at the Fairmont Pacific Rim. They can sit up at the bar and watch the sushi chefs up close and personal as they prepare their meal. You can also feel good about eating here: the RawBar was named the city's first 100% Ocean Wise sushi destination by the Vancouver Aquarium.

The Eatery, on Broadway, just east of Alma, is a quirky, funky sushi restaurant that's been around since the early 1980s. Kids will love the fun signs, electronic music and cartoon menu. The sushi roll names (and the food itself) are fun too. They have everything from the ‘Miss Piggy' roll (bacon, scallops, asparagus, roe and unagi sauce) to the ‘Found Nemo' roll (crab, asparagus, avocado and seared salmon). Come hungry!
