Lei Making
Best for: Ages 1 to 3

You’ll Need:

  • Construction paper/cardboard
  • Crayons/Markers
  • Stickers (optional)
  • String
  • Straws cut into one inch strips

How to Make:

  1. Cut out simple flowers in advance—cardbord works well for younger kids who are still learning how to thread string.
  2. Use a hole punch to pierce a hole in the centre of each flower.
  3. Let the kids decorate the flowers using markers, crayons or stickers.
  4. Help the kids thread the flowers onto the string with a piece of straw in between each flower to make their own leis.

Hula Dancing
Best for: Ages 3 to 5

You’ll Need:

  • Hawaiian music
  • Grass skirts or plastic garbage bags (optional)

How to Make/Play:

  1. Obtain enough grass skirts [link to gallery] for your young guests. If you choose, create your own grass skirts (see below).
  2. Have a designated ‘hula’ instructor who then teaches the little ones the basics. Or just play some fun dance games like Dance Freeze.

Grass Skirts

  1. Take a plastic bag and cut it open completely to form a large rectangle. Lie it down horizontally.
  2. Cut ribbon-sized strips from one end to the opposite, leaving a solid five-inch belt-sized part at the top.
  3. Wrap around the waist and tape together.

Limbo
Best for: Ages 5 and up

You’ll Need:

  • A six-foot stick or broom handle
  • Party music

How to Play:

  1. Get the music started.
  2. Two people hold either end of the stick.
  3. Individuals take turns trying to walk under the stick bending backwards without touching the stick or using their hands.
  4. The two designated holders lower it after each round until there is a winner.
