Family-Friendly Things To Do in Ottawa This Month

The Savvy Guide to September in Ottawa - SavvyMom

As the kids are all back to school now, it may be easy to reflect on the passing days of summer and wish we had more time to do family activities. However, the good news is, the fall is jam-packed with exciting autumn fun for the entire family. The weather remains pleasant (and for some, even more tolerable than the stifling summer heat) and the city is bustling with fairs, events and special occasions to celebrate the season.

We’ve gathered some ideas for you and your family to create a September bucket list. It’s time we stop letting July and August have all the fun!

See the RCMP musical ride

If you missed the RCMP Musical Ride this summer, you have a chance to catch it again at the Richmond Fair this fall. On September 12, this amazing show, featuring 32 riders and their horses, involves choreographed drills set to music. Plus, your $5 admission will get you into the kick off for the Richmond Fair! Children 5 years old and under are free. The RCMP Musical Ride begins at 7:30.

Attend a free breakfast on a farm

If you want to explore farm life and show the kids where their food comes from, the Farm and Food Care Ontario Breakfast on the Farm event in North Gower will be a wonderful family outing. The event is on September 8th beginning at 9 am (breakfast is served until 11:30 am) and it’s free! However, you are required to register in advance, so reserve your space online before you go. There will be an opportunity to see farm animals, family-friendly activities, and more. You’ll also enjoy delicious bites and explore the farm (owned by a local family!)

Head to Cannamore Orchard

It’s difficult not to associate the fall with apples and pumpkins which is why we know you’ll love going to Cannamore Orchard, located outside of Ottawa, with your family. In September, apples are the focus, and you can go pick your own while exploring the outdoor activities. Family activities take place on the weekends between 11 am and 4 pm until Thanksgiving weekend. Your family can enjoy a cow train ride, duck races, mazes and more. Admission details can be found on their website.

Get tickets to the Ottawa Senators on September 29

Hockey fans will be thrilled to know a new season is about to begin, and tickets are available for the Ottawa Senators preseason home games including ones against Toronto, Chicago, and Montreal. Visit the website to secure your tickets and get ready to cheer on the Sens!

Try out a new Arts program

Culture Days return from September 28 to September 30. Special artistic events and hands-on activities are taking place all weekend. The events are free and this is the perfect opportunity to explore a new experience like dance or music. You can even join the National Arts Centre for family-friendly events on September 30 between 1 pm and 4 pm. Visit the Culture Days website to search for a local event near you.

Be drawn to the Ottawa International Animation Festival

Once again, the Ottawa International Animation Festival is taking place at the end of September (September 26-September 30) and your family can purchase tickets to attend screenings and special events. You can learn the secrets from behind the scenes at panels about popular movies, or discover more about animation studios, careers and the making of your favourite shows and films. Tickets are available online.

Visit Mosaiculture

If you loved last year’s Mosaicanada, you will also enjoy Mosaiculture, back in Gatineau for another season. There are new sculptures to explore and the gardens are as stunning as last year. The outdoor space will be lovely on a fall day as you and your family stroll the path and see the different sculptures designed with flowers and plants. Don’t forget your camera because photo opportunities will present themselves around every corner. New this year: tickets are available online or at the gate.
