Are You Ready to Rock? School of Rock: The Musical is Coming to Ottawa

School of Rock

If you’ve been itching to take your kids to a live performance at the National Arts Centre, but you haven’t been able to find a storyline that your entire family will love, we have great news for you! Andrew Lloyd Webber’s School of Rock: The Musical is coming to Ottawa for a limited showing.

If the name sounds familiar, it’s probably because years ago (possibly before your kids even came along) you may have watched the original movie. In 2003, Jack Black starred in what would become a very popular, music-driven movie. With a cast of young actors who captured our hearts, a soundtrack that enthralled us, plenty of jokes, and a feel-good story, it’s not a surprise that the movie ended up being such a hit. It also lent itself nicely to a stage show.

In 2015, Andrew Lloyd Webber released School of Rock: The Musical on Broadway. It was of course based on the movie and included new music written by Andrew Lloyd Webber himself. It’s been a hit ever since and in 2016 it was nominated for four Tony Awards. Now, families in Ottawa can enjoy the Broadway Across Canada’s performance set to take the stage at the NAC from September 25-September 30.

The family-oriented show has evening curtain times as well as matinees on the weekend (some days offer both a matinee and an evening showtime).  Tickets are available now so you won’t want to miss this spectacular performance. Your kids will be singing along and may end up being inspired to pick up a new musical instrument when it’s all said and sung.

Dewey Finn (Jack Black’s character from the movie) loves rock n’ roll, and when the opportunity (and financial need) arises to pretend to be a substitute teacher at a private school, mischief, mayhem, and music ensue as he turns the prep-school kids into rockers. This means a lot of hilarity, fun and of course music. Whether your kids realize they love musical theatre yet, or they simply love a funny, heartwarming show, this is for them.

On September 30th, the NAC is hosting an extra-special performance for even more family fun. In advance of the 6:30 show is the Kids Rock Broadway special evening. There will be interactive opportunities for the kids to enjoy, like a musical instrument ‘petting zoo’ and other hands-on experiences. This also happens to be the show’s final performance here in Ottawa.

With a soundtrack that will have the entire family head-banging and singing along, plus an entertaining story, School of Rock: The Musical is a show you won’t want to miss. More details can be found on the NAC website, including how to secure your tickets.
