How to Recreate Your Best Holiday Traditions with Your Own Kids

In our house, excitement for the holiday season starts to build the moment our Halloween costumes come off. Setting up decorations, munching snacks while watching our favourite holiday movies, and playing together in the snow are just a few of the ways we celebrate our favourite time of year together. Passing on these traditions to my children is such a fun way to relive the parts of the holidays that I looked forward to myself as a kid. I have to admit, I also get a kick out of watching them do many of the things I did when I was younger, like poring over the Toys “R” Us Catalog and squealing with joy as they circle toys to add to their holiday wish lists. (Psst! If you don’t have a copy of the 2021 Toy Book at home, it’s available in stores and online, and contains over 4600 gift ideas for kids of all ages!)

Like many families, the past two years have helped us to recognize the importance of being together and making that time truly count. One of our favourite ways to be together is to play together, so this year, we’ll be focusing on choosing gifts that help us do just that.

Toys “R” Us has a huge selection of toys for kids (and kids at heart!) that can be found both in-store and online. While the experience of shopping in one of their 81 Canadian stores is definitely a ton of fun in itself, ToysRUs.ca also offers in-store shipping, as well as free, same-day home delivery, powered by Door Dash.

To help you (and the kids) with this year’s wish list, we picked a few of our favourite ideas to share based on the kind of play experiences you might like to create with your own family this year.

Build Together

For the budding architect in your family, there are endless building options to explore at Toys”R”Us. Few kids (or adults) can resist the fun of building with Lego, especially when it comes in fun themed sets from their favourite games and movies, like Minecraft, Star Wars and Harry Potter! For building activities that look a little different, Marble Run, K’nex and Magformers are sure to be a hit with everyone in the family.

Craft Together

If you’ve got a kiddo who loves to explore their inner artist, Toys”R”Us has over 1000 products to help them get their craft on. From timeless classics like Lite-Brite, Spirograph and Play-Doh to today’s favourites like Kinetic Sand, Rainbow Loom and the latest Art Cases from Crayola, there’s no limit to the masterpieces you’ll create together.

Pretend Together

Whether the kids in your family are superhero fans who love to collect action figures or save the day dressed up as their favourite characters, Toys”R”Us carries everything they need to immerse themselves in the worlds of their favourite heroes in comic books and on the big screen. If taking Barbie for a ride on a magical unicorn, caring for a soft and sweet baby doll or cooking up a fantastic make-believe meal in their very own kitchen is more up their alley, Toys”R”Us has plenty of fun options in those areas as well!

Tech Together

T’is the season for tech activities that you and your kids can enjoy together! Try staging a photo shoot with the Vtech KidiZoom camera, get your remote controls out for an epic Dino Battle, or hook up a karaoke machine to belt out a few tunes!

Game Together

It wouldn’t be the holidays without the family gathered around one of their favourite board games – at least, not in our house! Toys”R”Us has a huge selection of puzzles, family games, card games, preschool games, strategy games, table games, party games and French games to get your family working as a team, or spurring on a little friendly post-dinner competition!

STEM Together

Got a kid who’s itching to learn to code? Osmo has a super fun coding starter kit for kids with iPad access, or try Learning Resources Coding Critters for a screen-free coding experience! Toys”R”Us also has science kits galore for the kid who can never get enough experiments. From electronics to architecture and everything in between, Toys”R”Us has a treasure trove of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math activities to wrap up this season.

What gift-giving experiences are you hoping to share with your kids this year? Is there a toy that’s already made it to the top of your kiddo’s list? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments, and hope to see you in the toy aisles over at Toys “R” Us and ToysRUs.ca!

Thanks to Toys “R” Us for partnering with us on this fun post!
