Family Fun After Dark

Everything is more relaxed in the summer, including bedtimes. Sleep? There’s too much to do! We’re joining #TeamNoSleep and sharing our favourite kid-friendly activities to do in Vancouver by the light of the moon.

Check out the Richmond Night Market for a festive evening of Asian food and shopping. Sample bubble tea, sugar cane juice and of course, dim sum in the carnival atmosphere modelled after night markets in Asia, but bring cash, many vendors won’t accept credit cards.

Every Tuesday night is Summer Cinema in Stanley Park. Pack a blanket and picnic and watch a family classic—Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade plays Tuesday, July 21 and Jurassic Park plays Tuesday, August 18. Showtime depends on sundown so check the website and arrive early to score a great view.

Live theatre can be hit or miss with children, but under the stars and tree canopy of Stanley Park it’s pure magic. Theatre Under the Stars is producing Oliver! and Hairspray this season on the Malkin Bowl stage. Bring a blanket for little ones who have trouble sitting in chairs and bug spray—mosquitos also enjoy the show after dark.

Fireworks will light up the sky July 25, 29 and August 1 during the Honda Celebration of Light over English Bay. While the fireworks start at 10 pm rain or shine, head to Sunset Beach early to catch a live musical performance and get a prime viewing spot.

There’s no reason to get them to bed early during the longest days of the year, and hopefully if they’re late to bed, they’ll be late to rise the following day. At least one can dream.

Not feeling nocturnal? We’ve got daylight activities too, just keep clicking to our 9 Family-Friendly Summer Festivals in Vancouver.
