Fall is the perfect time of year to introduce kids not only to cooking, but learning more about where the foods they eat come from. Plan a day at a local farm to pick apples or pumpkins and then bring home a bounty of foods you can use for fall cooking projects.
Here are some fun ideas kids will love:
8 Fall Cooking Projects to Enjoy with Kids
Baked Apples:
This is perfect for younger kids because it is so easy. You can let them pick out their own apples and then you core them as this is the only difficult part. You can then all mix together the brown sugar and spices and they can fill their apples. Pop them in the oven and then eat them once they have cooled slightly. You can eat them as is, with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. Kids will love them.

Apple Enchiladas:
This is another fun and easy recipe. You can peel and slice apples and then kids can put them together. They just need small flour tortillas, apples, and cinnamon sugar. Have kids place apples in the tortillas, sprinkle with plenty of cinnamon sugar and roll them up. Place them in a baking dish and then prepare a sauce with a half cup each of butter, white sugar and brown sugar, a generous amount of cinnamon, and a pinch of mace. Simmer until smooth and then pour over top of the tortillas. Bake in the oven at about 350 until the apples are tender. Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. (You can use apple pie filling if you don’t want to worry about slicing and peeling the apples).
Banana Bread:
You can find a ton of banana bread recipes or may even have one of your own to use. Kids love getting involved with all of the mixing and will not be able to wait to try the bread fresh from the oven with butter.

Apple Crumble:
Apple crumble is another easy recipe kids will love. Older kids can help slice the apples and younger kids can get their hands nice and dirty mixing up the oats, butter, and sugar for the topping. It takes only a few minutes to prepare and will bake up within 30 minutes so there is not too much waiting to give it a try.
Oatmeal Raisin Cookies:
Oatmeal cookies are a heartier cookie that seems perfect for cold fall days. You can add raisins, craisins and of course chocolate chips too. Kids can use dried fruit to make fun faces on the cookies before you pop them in the oven.
Gingerbread:
Gingerbread cookies are usually associated with holiday baking, but you can buy some fun cookies cutters in fall themes and create some fun characters you can decorate with icing when they have cooled. You can also look at Halloween themed cookie cutters and opt for a sugar cookie recipe instead of gingerbread.
Spaghetti and Meat Balls:
Not all kids will want to get their hands dirty, but most will love it. Making a good old fashioned spaghetti and meat balls meal is lots of fun for the whole family. Just make sure everyone washes their hands thoroughly before and after digging their hands into the meat ball bowl.
Pizza:
Every kid loves making their own pizza. Put out all of the ingredients and then let everyone top up their individual pizza with cheese, pepperoni, and veggies. Pop them in the oven and enjoy once the cheese has had a little time to melt and bubble.
Cooking is the perfect past time to keep kids busy on chilly, damp fall afternoons. These recipes are sure to keep them entertained as well as offer yummy treats and meals ideal for fall.
