A Smooth Start to Your Morning

270x180_Smoothies

I am always looking for quick and healthy breakfast ideas at our house (outside the Froot Loops box, that is), so lately we’ve been experimenting with smoothies. For kids like my son who has difficulty sitting down for extended periods of time (like more than two minutes), they are perfect as he can come and go, and sip his breakfast as he gets ready for his day (not that I am condoning that behaviour, just to be clear).
Usually we go with some kind of berry, banana and yogurt combination, but with winter flu everywhere, I have been looking for ways to get more Vitamin C into the kids. So to mix it up a bit, we’ve been trying more citrus-based recipes. Here’s one of our recent favourites—a bit tangier than most smoothie recipes, it’s a refreshing start to the day, and the Greek yogurt offers a great source of protein, compared to regular yogurt.

Citrus Wake-Up Smoothie

You’ll Need

  • 2 Tbsp lemon juice
  • Juice of ½ a grapefruit
  • ½ cup orange juice
  • 2 Tbsp honey
  • ½ cup (heaping) Greek yogurt (we like the Liberté brand)
  • 1 banana, chunked (ideally frozen in advance to add thickness to the smoothie but fresh works as well)
  • ½ cup ice cubes

Prep and Cook

  1. Pour all ingredients except the ice into a blender and pulse a few times to blend.
  2. Add ice and blend on high until smooth. Pour into a chilled glass and enjoy!
