15 Picture-Perfect Spots For Family Photos In and Around Calgary

Fall photos Calgary

I’ve gotta be honest. Calgarians are pretty spoiled when it comes to having a wealth of incredible locations to take outdoor family photos. Whether you’re looking for gorgeous nature shots or eye-catching urban landscapes and artwork, Calgary and its surrounding area have even more options than you may have realized. We’ve rounded up 15 of our favourite locations in and around Calgary to take family photos, so grab your camera and prepare to get clickin’!

Scotsman’s Hill

Without a doubt, Scotsman’s Hill is the location that screams “Calgary!” more than any other on this list. With an incredible view of the city skyline and the Saddledome, a photo from Scotsman’s Hill is picture-perfect for Calgarians at heart.

Fish Creek Park

Covering over 13 square kilometres, Fish Creek Provincial Park has many incredible locations to take family photos. Whether you’re looking for the perfect backdrop of trees, water, rocks, or manmade structures like bridges or the beautiful Bow Valley Ranche, there’s no shortage of variety when location scouting in Fish Creek. You may want to consider exactly what type of photos you’re hoping for, as there are many “starting points” for the park across the Southwest of the city. If you’re planning to get photos near Bow Valley Ranche, there may be a fee for professional photos, if the restaurant is open. Keep in mind that many wildlife creatures make Fish Creek their home, so watch for furry friends during your visit.

Downtown East Village

East Village is the perfect spot for family photos for so many reasons. If you’re looking for a backdrop that includes murals and art installations (like the Device to Root Out Evil, aka the upside-down church), vintage buildings (like the Simmons Building) or a bright pop of colour (via The Bounce Games Park or the rainbow-hued shipping containers at The East Village Junction), look no further than Calgary’s East Village!

Since it opened in November 2018, The Central Library has become a popular spot to take photos for both Calgarians and visitors from around the world. With its stunning architecture, it’s easy to see why! Once your photos are finished, why not find a comfy spot to enjoy a good book?

Rundle Ruins

623 12 Avenue SE

The Rundle Ruins are what’s left of Calgary’s first major hospital. The sandstone structure is an incredibly popular location for photos amongst grads, newlyweds, and everyone in between. If you’re planning to get photos taken at the Rundle Ruins, your best bet is probably to avoid the weekends if you don’t want to wait in line for the perfect photo op!

McHugh Bluff

With an amazing view of the changing leaves in the fall, McHugh Bluff is an excellent location for family photos. From the Bluff, you’ll also be able to catch sight of downtown, Prince’s Island Park, the Bow River, the Peace Bridge, and more.

Inglewood Bird Sanctuary

2425 9 Avenue SE

The Inglewood Bird Sanctuary is a great place to visit whether you’re looking to take photos or not. With free entry into the 36-hectare park, visitors can see all kinds of migratory birds and mammals while wandering along the pathway next to the Bow River. There are many great spots to get family photos, our favourite of which is the gorgeous brick Colonel Walker House.

Stephen Avenue Walk

There are plenty of great spots to stop along Stephen Avenue for a photo! Rainbow crosswalks, window murals, historic buildings, beautiful archways and the Galleria Trees are just a few must-snap attractions you’ll find as you wander down 8th Avenue. There are also tons of great shops and restaurants along Stephen Ave, making it a great place to spend an afternoon!

The BeCubed Mural on the Radius Building in Bridgeland

If you’re looking to make your photos really POP, the 30-foot BeCubed Mural on the Radius Building near Luke’s Drug Mart on Edmonton Trail can’t be beat! Make sure to stop inside Luke’s after taking photos to check out their awesome and eclectic selection of housewares, vinyl records, groceries, coffee, and their famous charcoal soft serve.

Confederation Park

905 30 Avenue NW

A beautiful creek, mature trees, wetlands, a flower/rock garden and a natural playground are just some of the features of Confederation Park. Wildlife such as ducks, geese and butterflies may also make their way into your photos if you’re lucky!

Griffith Woods Park

160 Discovery Ridge Blvd SW

Griffith Woods Park lies along the banks of the Elbow River and is a designated nature preserve which includes one of the only strands of White Spruce forest in the city’s park system. Boardwalks and wetlands, as well as plenty of wildlife, make Griffith Woods a dreamy location for photos! Because Griffith Woods has vegetation that is a food source for many wild animals, be on the lookout for larger mammals during your visit.

Kayben Farms

316034 32 St E, Okotoks, AB

Our family recently decided to hire a photographer to join us on an outing to Kayben Farms, since we knew getting our kiddos to sit still for more traditional photos was going to be a challenge. For photos with more of a “lifestyle” feel, an outing to a place like Kayben Farms is a great option. With a giant slide, petting zoo, bouncy “blob” and more, there were tons of ways to keep our kids busy while our photographer snapped away!

Big Hill Springs Provincial Park

Big Hill Springs Road, Cochrane, AB

Tucked into the forest at Big Hill Springs Provincial Park are pretty little streams and waterfalls which flow year-round, making it an excellent backdrop for family photos. The park provides a hike that’s easy for family members of all ages to try out, so you can enjoy an afternoon hike and a picnic in between takes!

Banff Gondola

It’s basically impossible to get a bad photo anywhere in Banff. Whether you’re walking down Banff Avenue, exploring trails, visiting the Fairmont Palliser, or taking a ride to the summit of Sulphur Mountain, you’re guaranteed to get an incredible shot. If you needed an excuse to make the hour-long drive out to Banff from Calgary, let your family photos be it!

Moraine Lake

Stunning mountain backdrop? Check. Sparkling blue water? Check. Evergreens stretching as far as the eye can see? Check. If you’re willing to take a bit of a drive from Calgary, Moraine Lake has one of the most breathtaking backdrops you could ask for. If you ask me, the two-hour drive is more than worth it for a photo like this!

What are your favourite places to take family photos in and around Calgary? Do you have a great spot that should have made the list? We’d love to hear them in the comments!
