Things To Do in Ottawa in October

This month may already feel busy and overwhelming with Thanksgiving and Halloween, but that doesn’t mean you and your family can’t find new and exciting ways to spend time together around the city! We’ve rounded up some special events and activities happening this month to check out with the kids.

Visit a Pumpkin Patch

Celebrate Halloween and fall season with a stroll through the pumpkin patch. Many of our area pumpkin patches offer wagon rides, pick your own pumpkins, photo opportunities and special events on weekends (and sometimes weekdays or PD Days) all month long. Not sure where the closest one in your area is? Check out our list of pumpkin patches!

Run Away from Zombies

When zombies chase, you better run! During the Rattle Me Bones Zombie Run at Proulx Farm on October 5, you’ll be racing through a maze of zombies all to raise money for bone and soft tissue cancers. This 2.5-kilometre run is recommended for those 13 years old or older, so parents of teens, this is how you can get out and get active together. All it takes are some zombies! The run begins at 4:30 pm.

Cheer On the Home Team!

There are only a few games left for the Ottawa Fury to play at Lansdowne (their final home game is October 12) but don’t worry; your sports-loving family can still cheer on your local Ottawa teams by watching the Ottawa 67s (keep an eye out for Family Fun Days on Sundays), the Ottawa Senators, or by grabbing tickets to see the Ottawa RedBlacks football team play.

Step Out of the Cold and Into a Greenhouse

The annual butterfly show at Carleton University returns from October 5 to October 13. Over 1300 species will be flying around the greenhouses and families are invited to check it out. There is no cost for admission, although donations will be accepted. Looking for more free family fun this fall? We’ve created an article with even more opportunities to get out without the added cost!

Go to the Metcalfe Fair

Fall fairs are a tradition in this area, and the Metcalfe Fair is always one that brings out many people looking to indulge in fair food, ride the midway or engage with the live entertainment. The fair takes place from Thursday, October 3 until Sunday, October 6. We recommend you visit the website for details on the times and the admission fees, including the midway bracelets.

Experience Parc Omega at Night

Until October 12, you can still participate in Parc Omega’s new event in the evening. A darkened, night-time exploration of the grounds during a tour, while you listen to the animals, will be completely different from your usual Parc Omega adventures. Omega By Night is only available on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at dusk. Your walk through the trees will be unique as you hear the frogs, see the statues and walk to the wolf enclosure. Children 5 and under are free, admission prices for the rest of the family range from $10.99 – $15.99.

Have Some Old Fashioned Fun in Navan

This Saturday, October 5th, from 11 am until 3 pm, mark your calendars and head to the Navan Fairgrounds to enjoy some old fashioned fun at their Fall Fest! This isn’t about vendors and the sale of goods, this Fall Fest is all about reliving the fun of old fashioned family games and activities that your kids will love. They can participate in scarecrow making, a fish pond, races, ball hockey, crafts, a BBQ and more. Bring a decorated pumpkin by noon to enter into the pumpkin decorating contest!
