Earth Day Events in Vancouver

For Earth Day 2012, we’€™re paying homage to the Lorax and his words of wisdom: ‘€œUnless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’€™s not.’€
So let’€™s make sure our kids learn to care. Here are some ways to get them started.

Green City Race
Register and take part in the inaugural Green City Race, presented by Evergreen BC, on Saturday, April 21 (11 am start). Your family can race against the clock, as you use public transit and walk to find scavenger hunt items around the city. Visit green destinations and solve environmental challenges along the way in this three-hour race.

Earth Day Parade and Climate Festival
Bike, walk or take the subway to Grandview Highway and Commercial Drive for the second annual Earth Day Parade on Sunday, April 22. Then stay for the Festival at Grandview Park (just a few blocks north) right after. It’€™s a Wilderness Committee event, organized by Youth for Climate Justice Now. The festival will host art competitions, youth performers, and guest speakers. The focus of this youth and family festival is to raise awareness about the effects of climate change on the environment.

Nature Festival
Head out to Burnaby Lake Rowing Pavilion for EarthFest, an annual family nature festival, hosted by the Wildlife Rescue Association’€”festivities start at 11 am on Sunday, April 22. Learn how to build a bird or bee house, go for a canoe ride, hike a nature trail or get some great green living tips and information on local environmental initiatives.

There are plenty of neighbourhood events taking place in communities across the Lower Mainland’€”so there’s no excuse for missing out on arguably the most important birthday of the year. Tested by Michelle T., Vancouver
