A Place to Go

Lots of family time calls for good ideas for things to do and places to go. Here’s one of our favourite excursions the kids will love. (And if you get someone else to take the kids, you might just be able to swing a few hours home alone.)
Head to James Bay and the south-west end of Dallas Road. First stop is the Helijet Port (79 Dallas Road). Spend a few minutes watching the Helijet take off or land. There is ample parking and what’s amazing is how close you can get to these incredible machines.

Continue past the Cruise Ship Birth next door to the Odgen Point Cafe and Dive Centre for a tea, hot chocolate or snack. You’ll probably see some scuba divers gearing up just outside the cafe or diving one of the best sites in the area. The cafe has clean washrooms and assorted soups, sandwiches and treats. We like their hot apple cider this time of year. Then the kids can walk the breakwater—a vast stretch of concrete that goes straight out into the ocean.

If there is more energy to be burned off, the Dallas Road Walkway starts from the cafe and offers miles of panoramic views, off-leash areas for dogs, benches, kite-flying opportunities and perfect hide-and-go-seek areas. On a windy day, they will see wind surfers and kite surfers battling the waves and flying through the air.

Everyone will come home smiling, exhausted and maybe even ready for a nap.
