Watermelon Pizza

There are a lot of creative serving suggestions for watermelon floating around the Internet these days, and if you don’t mind, I think I’d like to offer one more for your consideration. After recently witnessing the enthusiasm with which a group of kids made their own watermelon pizzas, I’ve decided this just might be the best idea I’ve seen yet for a little edible fun at a summer birthday soiree.

The idea is that watermelon is cut into thin pizza-shaped triangular pieces, and then dressed with a variety of toppings based on the child’s taste. The ‘sauce’ is lightly sweetened whipped cream, which can be smeared over the surface of the watermelon wedge, then decorated with items that have been set out in small bowls for the kids to choose from. It’s a completely brilliant and fun way to make watermelon exciting again, especially after snacking on it all summer long.

Topping suggestions include:

  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Chopped nuts
  • Toasted coconut
  • Banana chips
  • Trail mix
  • Blueberries
  • Peach slices
  • Raspberries
  • Chopped mint
  • Sliced bananas
  • Raisins
  • Colourful sprinkles

If you aren’t interested in allowing the kids to make their own pizzas, you can always make one yourself and serve it as part of the party menu. In that case, I would suggest sticking to one topping combination and using it on all of the slices so as not to create any competition over who gets what type of ‘pizza’.

What are some of your favourite edible party crafts to make with the kids? Would you serve a watermelon pizza?
