Easy Cake Balls Recipe

Cake Balls Recipe

You can use this cake balls recipe with any flavour of cake or colour of candy coating.

A cake balls recipe is great to have in your back-pocket for any gathering with kids.

Feel free to use orange and black for Halloween, yellow and purple for Easter, and any favourite colour for a birthday celebration. We love them in red and white for Canada Day!

For reasons we don’t quite understand, homemade cake does not yield the same type of cake ball.
For this reason we recommend using a boxed mix.

Candy melts (round, coloured chocolate disks) can be purchased at most bulk, craft, and cake decorating stores.

Makes 24 balls

You’ll Need

  • 1 boxed cake mix (any flavour)
  • 1 can of icing (any flavour)
  • 1 package of candy melts
  • Optional: a second package of candy melts in an alternate colour for decoration

Prep and Cook

  • Prepare cake mix according to the package directions using any of the recommended pan sizes.
Allow cake to cool and then crumble it up into a large bowl.
  • Add frosting and stir until well blended.
  • Using a small scoop or melon baller, form balls with the cake mixture.
Place them on a parchment lined baking sheet and put in the freezer for 15–20 minutes.
  • Melt chocolate candy melts in a heatproof bowl set over simmering water, or in a microwave-safe bowl in 20-second increments, stirring occasionally until smooth.
Partially thaw the cake balls while the chocolate is melting.
  • Dip cake balls in the chocolate (use a fork to hold on to them).
Place on parchment paper to set.
  • If using a second colour for decoration, melt the second colour candy melts using the directions above.
Transfer to a piping bag or small zip top bag, snip the corner, and drizzle melted chocolate over the set cake balls.
    Allow to harden before serving.
