Park It at the Beach

Ever notice how the inside of your house gets smaller as the weather improves? You need to get outside’€”for a picnic, some biking or maybe a paddle or a ride in a raft. We know where to go’€”Sandy Beach Park.
Nestled on the Elbow River, just west of the end of 14th SW, is a beautiful little spot known as Sandy Beach Park (and yes, there really is a beach area’€”but don’€™t expect any sand). For families who love to switch up activities while enjoying a day out, it’€™s a great spot to get them all in.

Go for a bike ride along any of the main paths. The west pathway is a clear route, as the river path tends to have lots of pedestrian traffic. Be sure to check out the suspension bridge, but be aware that bikes need to be walked across.

When you’€™re done, settle down for lunch at one of the picnic locations. Sites include tables, outdoor grills (bring your own charcoal) and, in some cases, fire pits (although these are very popular so go early to secure one). Sites can be booked online or over the phone. Kids will love the shaded playground, and the fact that there’€™s lots of space to play Frisbee or just run around.

Finally (and this is what makes it such a great spot), for those who love canoeing or a raft ride without the white water rush, Sandy Beach Park is a perfect launch site.

Your four-legged furry family members can also join in on the fun. There are lots of other dogs around, as well as a ‘€˜dog’€™ water fountain and a designated spot across the bridge where dogs can play in the water.

Good to Know: There are two parking lots and seasonal public washrooms. The beach is rocky, so water shoes are recommended for everyone.

It’€™s true that life can be a beach even when you’€™re in the city. For more places to explore, visit these 6 Secret Gardens and Parks in Calgary.
