Urban Adventures

Yo ho, yo ho a pirate’s life for me….
We know this isn’t your theme song anymore and you’ve shunned the life of reckless debauchery for a more stable existence. Still, there is adventure to be found in the city. Take an imaginative safari down one of Calgary’s most enjoyable streets. Visit an island, swing in the urban jungle, hunt for patios and don’t forget to check out the local wildlife. Oh, yeah…plan to bring the kids. This adventure is G-rated.

4th Street SW between 17th and 24th Avenues is packed with some of Calgary’s best urban eateries. For this weekend jaunt, we recommend saving the fine dining for date night in favour of some family friendly favourites.

Start by parking your car in one of the parkades on 23rd Avenue just west of 4th. There is also ample meter parking on most of the side streets.

If you’re thinking lunch, there are a couple of good options. My Marvin’s Deli is a reborn Calgary favourite. The sandwiches and cheesecake are to die for. Or, cross the street and head south to Mercato Foods. This Italian market restaurant has highchairs, pasta and delicious Italian donuts. People watching on the patio is complimentary.

If you’re looking for fewer calories and a little more caffeine, stop by the Purple Perk. The coffee is good and the sandwiches to go are excellent. Vino from Bin 905 is the perfect compliment.
