What a pretty girl. What a handsome young man. They’re so beautiful. We love bestowing compliments on our children and certainly we love hearing others admiring our progeny. But in order to build their self esteem and teaching them what matters, it’s important to communicate our kids’ value beyond their outward appearance. Thanks to Big Life Journal, I discovered this list of compliments for kids that are not based on looks and instead focus on their actions or attributes they can control…

10 Compliments for Kids Not Based on Looks

  1. “I love listening to your stories.”
  2. “You’re a thoughtful friend.”
  3. “I love spending time with you.”
  4. “You make me smile.”
  5. “I love how focused you are.”
  6. “You have great ideas.”
  7. “You’re a great listener.”
  8. “I admire your confidence.”
  9. “You’re determined.”
  10. “You are very kind.”

Compliments for kids that are not based on looks communicate unconditional love so long as they are sincere. Never add a “but!” And be sure to model being gracious when receiving a compliment. A simple, “thank you” is the best and simplest response.
