Organic Goodness

BabyGourmet

Many moms wonder why they should buy organic foods for their babies. There is a lot of debate surrounding the topic of organic foods, but Jennifer Broe and Jill Vos, co-founders of Baby Gourmet, have some compelling arguments. Here is an excerpt from an article written by Baby Gourmet’s nutritionist, Jennifer House on why organic food is her preferred choice.

Organic fruits and vegetables are grown without synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, growth regulators like antibiotics and growth hormones. So people who eat organically grown foods are exposed to fewer pesticides. While the pesticides found on non-organic foods are quickly cleared from adult bodies, the effects on children’s developing bodies and brains are not known.

It has been shown that organic produce has higher levels of phytochemicals than conventionally grown produce. Phytochemicals quench free radicals in our body and may help prevent cancer.

We do know that organic food is more often fresh and local, therefore tastes much better. Another important reason to promote organic foods is that it supports sustainable farming methods that will protect our environment for our children. Organic farming practices include crop rotation, recycling waste, and use of insects to control pests. Pesticides are not running into near-by waters polluting them, and the soil on organic farms remains healthy.

Certain fruits and vegetables are more contaminated with pesticides than other produce. If you decide to purchase some organic produce, these are good fruits and vegetable to start with: apples, bell peppers, celery, cherries, grapes, nectarines, peaches, pears, potatoes, raspberries, spinach and strawberries.

Why not raise your baby to know the sweetness of a fresh fruit for dessert and give them healthy organic alternatives that will keep them pesticide-free and their taste buds lively!

Baby Gourmet is a convenient and healthy food for your baby. Often we think of convenience foods as unhealthy. And usually they are—full of processed ingredients, additives, preservatives, colours, unhealthy fats and salt, while low in vitamins, minerals, fibre and healthy fats. Baby Gourmet, however is made from organic ingredients, uses whole grains and is free of added sugar and salt, but is a healthy ‘convenient’ food.

In a season where keeping colds and flu at bay is key, try out organic alternatives. Not only are they a delicious option for adults and kids, but they’ll help keep your system in better shape.
