While August marks the month that some kids in the Ottawa area go back to school, or when you begin to shop for school supplies for their September return, it’s also a fantastic month to cross some things off your summer bucket list of family activities. From special events that are only available for a short period of time, to activities that are a must-do during every Ottawa summer, we’ve rounded up a few family-friendly adventures and fun ways to spend August together.
Set aside the back to school to-do list for a few more weeks and enjoy the last of our summer days.
Bite Into the West End Food Truck Rally
Indulge in a new taste of Ottawa this summer at the West End Food Truck Rally on August 10 from 11 am until 7 pm at 3861 Old Richmond Road. With over a dozen food trucks (from savoury bites to sweet treats), every family member will be able to find something delicious to eat.
Head to the Beach
The beach is great for splashing around on a hot summer day, but many of Ottawa’s beaches are also the perfect spot to play, run, explore, dig in the sand, grab an ice cream and meet up with friends and family before school gets back in session. Visit our list of beaches in the Ottawa area that will be perfect for you.
Is it really the summer if you haven’t been to a traditional country fair? Look no further than Ottawa’s East end when the Navan Fair returns to entertain families from all over the Ottawa area. From August 8th-11th, make plans to enjoy the amusement rides, concerts, fair food and family fun.
Taste of Manotick
Save the date for August 17 from 4 pm to 8 pm for the Taste of Manotick, a free family event filled with live music, entertainment and food tastings. Main Street will be lined with local businesses and you’ll have the opportunity to sample, explore and learn more about the Village of Manotick.
Go to the DaVinci Exhibit
You only have until September 2 to check out the thought-provoking special exhibit Leonardo DaVinci: 500 Years of Genius at the Canada Science and Technology Museum. After you’ve visited the exhibit (read more about it this article), explore the rest of the museum!
Westboro Fuse returns on August 17 and 18 with family-friendly programming you won’t want to miss. This is the block party so many people look forward to every year! Vendors will showcase their products, entertainment will be happening live on the street, and music will be enjoyed by all.
Summertime Fun at Saunders
Saunders Farm is hosting the Sunflower Festival (August 9-18) and has special summer hours and opportunities for families to play, jump and run at the farm. Until September 1, enjoy everything the Farm has to offer at this time of year. Read more about Saunders Farm in our recent article.
