When the sun is out and the weather turns warm, it’s fun to find a nice patio somewhere in the city to have a refreshing drink outside while wearing your sun glasses and relaxing. But it’s a dream parents may put on hold when we start to think about bringing the strollers along, or finding a way to encourage our kids to just sit and enjoy their lemonade too.
The good news is, there are places in Ottawa where you and the kids can find patio time, and enjoy it. It’s the perfect way to unwind together on a sunny day, whether you order a glass of sangria or an iced coffee. We’ve rounded up a few patios that you may want to check out.
Lansdowne doesn’t have a shortage of patios to discover, and with a play park, skate park and water play space nearby, it’s already a destination for families in the city. Check out the Local Public Eatery patio. With drink and food specials and plenty of tasty bites, you’ll enjoy being on this patio (that also happens to include a bocce ball game!)
While overlooking Parliament Hill and the Ottawa River, Tavern on the Hill has become an Instagram-worthy patio destination. The best part is that your kids will love it, too. Featuring gourmet hot dogs (or plain ones for those who aren’t as adventurous) and cold, refreshing drinks, Tavern on the Hill is the perfect summer destination. There’s also an ice cream spot nearby if you needed further enticement. Read about our Tavern on the Hill visit we shared before. Also, there is the newly opened Tavern on the Falls, located along Sussex Drive, offering you different views.
Breakfast on the patio might be just what your weekends need and Cafe Latte Cino is ready to serve up waffles topped with gelato, hot coffee and chocolate fondue if you really want to indulge. Or maybe you just want to grab a late lunch together, or snacks after their soccer match. Set in Orleans, the comfortable patio is a sunny spot to visit with the kids.
Location is one thing, but the rich bites at Chocolate Favoris’ ice cream is what will keep you wanting to head back to their patio. Their patio is a hopping place to be as the temperatures begin to rise, and it’s no wonder. Even into the late evening, it’s a busy place thanks to their indulgent chocolate dipped soft serve ice cream cones. All three Ottawa locations (Orleans, Kanata, Barrhaven) offer a patio to enjoy.
In Ottawa’s West end, you can unwind on the patio at The Cheshire Cat Pub. Residents enjoy spending time on the patio munching on the British-inspired cuisine of this family-owned pub. We love that there is sometimes live entertainment on the patio (this usually keeps kids quite happy too!)
You’ll love the location of Mexicali Rosa’s on Dow’s Lake. Set right on the water, the patio will give you picturesque views of not only Dow’s Lake, but also the full trees along the Queen Elizabeth Parkway. We love the kids’ menu, the opportunity to sit by the water and the food specials like Taco Tuesday.
Located on Preston Street, La Dolce Vita is serving up pizza on the patio. Their gourmet pizzas (with gluten-free crust available) taste delicious, and the patio is a casual spot to visit with the kids while you enjoy the ‘za and the house wine. You won’t want to forget to enjoy some dessert (we highly recommend the tiramisu!)
Set in the heart of the Byward Market, Tucker’s Market place is known for its delicious buffet spread of home cooked meals. Whether you go for brunch, lunch or dinner, Tucker’s has a giant awning to keep you out of the sun, but in the outdoors when you visit.
We love the menu options at Flapjack’s located on Preston Street (every bite sounds like it will appeal to the kids, especially the pancakes) and when the temperatures rise, their refreshing non-alcoholic drinks with free refills, and their thirst quenching adult drinks (like their fun bucket of sangria) will surely fill up their patio.
While the 177 year old building where Mill Street Ottawa Brew Pub is located surely can tell many stories, we know people will be talking about the food and drinks at this Ottawa brewery over and over again. The comfortable patio is beautifully set neat Lebreton Flats.
Combine a relaxing stop on the patio with playtime at the beach thanks to the Westboro Beach Cafe. This casual, inviting patio is just steps away from Westboro Beach and offers a menu that the entire family can enjoy (like hot dogs, nachos, salads and more). The cafe is cash only, so come prepared!
