How to Make the Most of Your Holiday Videos
Tips and Tricks from Sony Canada’s Digital Imaging Team

  • Relax! Try to make your family and friends feel comfortable so they will act naturally in the videos. Keep the camcorder a step away, and try to be discreet while catching the action from a distance. Loosen them up by interacting with them, so they forget about being in front of a camera! They should get over stage fright once the camera’s been rolling for a while.
  • Less is more. Shoot one scene taking 3–5 second clips. Any longer on the same frame and the video can really drag on when it comes time to watch it.
  • Location, location, location! Change locations and take shots from different angles and perspectives. Instead of only using zoom, try moving closer instead. When you want to walk around with the camera, keep it near your body to avoid excess motion.
  • Position your subject off-center for a more interesting shot. Try to get at least two types of camera shots for each scene you film: close-up, medium, or wide.
  • Play! Test out the great technological features like Face Detection and Smile Shutter™ before you start rolling, so you know what you like. Smile Shutter automatically detects and takes a still image of your subject if he or she smiles. Face Detection also optimizes focus, exposure, skin colour, and flash settings* to ensure subjects always look their best.
  • Look for the light. If you are recording videos inside, turn on all the lights.
  • Keep it simple. Don’t underestimate how everyday moments will make memorable videos when the kids are older and out of the house.
