8 Tips to Declutter and Save Space in Your Kitchen
I spent years of my life in a tiny Copenhagen apartment, where the only appliances I had were a small stove and a mini fridge, so finding ways to save space became a newfound way of life. And while those days have come and gone, I still use what I’ve learned to tackle my small kitchen here at home. And it couldn’t be easier! Try these tips to save space in your kitchen so you’ll actually want to get in there and cook up a storm.
8 Tips for Decluttering the Kitchen
Mason jars are your best friend
When you have limited cupboard space, it’s easy to let boxes of pasta or bags of rice end up on top of your counter. But by organizing certain dry goods into mason jars, you can have them on display while being neat, tidy and functional. Try keeping items like toasted nuts or dried fruit in them, where they look pretty and are easy to get to, so you’ll have more room for your basic pantry staples hidden in the cupboards.
Invest in an affordable wire-shelving unit
Wire shelves are a game changer, because you can add hooks to hang extra frying pans or cookware that you don’t have a home for, while making room for a ton of stuff in a small amount of space. Use the shelves to store cookbooks, canisters with cooking utensils, or even as an open pantry.
Buy high-quality pieces
If you have one or two good quality baking sheets, a heavy-duty frying pan, a Dutch oven, and a few sizes of pots and pans, you shouldn’t need much more. By purchasing better quality pieces, you’ll be able to get more use out of these items, without needing to stock up on extras.
Invest in a cart on wheels
If you suffer from small kitchen syndrome you know how valuable counter space is. If this is your challenge, our advice is to purchase an inexpensive cart (preferably on wheels!) where you can store some of your bigger items. Our go-to cart? This cool stainless steel one from IKEA.
Find a storage trunk
If you have a tiny apartment or condo, you don’t often have space for a hutch to fit all those nice plates, platters, and stemware. Instead, I found an antique wooden trunk, which doubles as seating for half of the dinner table, where I can store all of those beautiful pieces that I don’t use on a daily basis.
Mount your to-do lists on the wall
Declutter kitchen counters by mounting basics – like a calendar, to-do lists, kids homework assignments or school notices and even upcoming bills – on the wall. Buy a pin, magnetic or cork board (we like these) and free up some drawers and counter space for cooking!
Use bins to keep your pantry ultra-organized
We love bins and there is no better place to use them then in your pantry. Invest in a few inexpensive bins (we like plain white plastic ones as they can be cleaned if any spills happen) in assorted sizes, and store everything from pastas to rice to grains to spices in separate bins. Not only will your cupboards look more organized, but finding things will be a cinch too.
Use drawer and cabinet organizers
Today you can pretty much buy any kind of drawer or cabinet organizer you like. So instead of just chucking your pots, pans, Tupperware and baking sheets into open cabinets, where all hell tends to break loose within days, head on over to your local kitchen store and buy some organizers. We promise these will make all the difference with keeping your drawers and kitchen cabinets clean and organized.
