Comfort-Watch TV Shows for Adults That Kids Won’t Hate (or Be Traumatized By)

TV Shows that are pure comfort viewing for adults. Kids welcome! xxoo - SavvyMom

Once upon a time, “family TV” meant animated kids’ shows on repeat. And the ideal was to find kids’ shows that didn’t grate on your last nerve. And then once your kids get a bit older, suddenly everything feels like it’s either too babyish… or quietly devastating. And then all of a sudden they putter off to their rooms or keep themselves busy with something other than the TV and then it’s yours to enjoy again.

But if you’re parenting tweens or teens, you know the struggle. You want something comforting after a long day. That’s for grown ups. And if they happen to pass by when it’s on, ideally there will be nothing too intimate or awkward or traumatizing on the screen. No-one wants to accidentally stumble into a storyline that leads to awkward silences or late-night Googling. And no 12-year-old should accidentally watch Bridgerton because their mom didn’t realize the amount of (graphic) sex therein. Ahem.

I like having the TV on in the background. It keeps me company while I tidy or cook dinner. I’ve discovered a sweet spot when it comes to shows that genuinely comfort adults and actually entertain kids. Mine will often hang around and start watching mid-season with me, which I genuinely love. These shows are funny, kind, and hopeful, and any mature themes usually fly right over the younger kids’ heads.

Here are some of our favourite TV shows for adults that are comfort watches but work for the whole household:

Feel-Good Comedies:

Schitt's Creek Comfort Viewing Shows for Adults - SavvyMom

Schitt’s Creek

The idea for this article came about from me re-watching Schitt’s Creek after the devastating loss of Catherine O’Hara. This beloved Canadian comedy follows a once-wealthy family forced to rebuild their lives in a tiny town they once bought as a joke. The initial fish-out-of-water humour slowly evolves into a true masterclass in empathy, growth, and chosen family. Kids enjoy the exaggerated characters and physical comedy. Parents appreciate the emotional depth and subtle social commentary.

Ted Lasso Comfort Viewing TV Shows for Adults - SavvyMom

Ted Lasso

At first glance, this is merely a goofy sports comedy about an American football coach hired to run an English Premier League soccer team. It’s really a gentle exploration of leadership, vulnerability, and kindness. Ted Lasso is especially great for sports families; kids relate to the team dynamics, while their parents connect with the emotional honesty and life lessons.

Kids enjoy the colourful setting and silly humour. Their parents appreciate the philosophical questions and clever writing.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Set in a New York police precinct, this snappy ensemble comedy blends absurd humour with genuine warmth. It’s inclusive, driven by characters, and is refreshingly kind for a workplace sitcom. It’s always been more than a makeover show. Queer Eye helps people rebuild confidence through fashion, food, and self-care. Tips for viewing shows for adults with kids:

Over time, I’ve learned that shared TV works best when I’ve previewed the show initially and know if it’s suitable to be left on where younger eyes can see it. If something ever felt off I had no qualms about turning it off. I love it when my kids hang out and watch with me, but there is absolutely no pressure. Some of our best conversations have started because of a joke in a sitcom or a moment in a drama. Good TV opens doors that you might never think to crack yourself and brings up subjects you might never think to broach.

Because my family dynamic changed so significantly in such a short time, we’re not often all in the same space together and if we are, it’s not for long. Sometimes sitting on the couch together and laughing at the same thing is what we all need to reconnect just a little.
