I have to be honest; the first time I took my son to get a haircut, I was shocked at how stressful the experience was for him. Because I love a visit to the salon, I assumed it would be the same for my little guy. As it turns out, this is a pretty typical response for a lot of kids, but luckily, it doesn’t have to be this way.

They have a variety of services available including basic kids’ cuts ($17.95), wash, cut and dry ($22.95), specialty braids, buns and up-dos, and fun extras like hair crystals, feathers, beads and more. Mom and dad are welcome to take a turn in the chair as well, with women’s cuts priced at $25.95 and men’s at $21.95. There are fun cars to sit in during haircuts, and an awesome play area to spend time in while you wait!

The stylists at Melonhead know just what it takes to make your kiddo’s haircut a breeze. They have fun, themed seats (like airplanes, race cars, and even ponies), toys, bubbles, kid shows and lollipops. They know that kids have a hard time sitting still, so you can count on getting in and out in no time. They also have kid-friendly products for sale, many of which are made by Canadian ‘mompreneurs’! Hair colour spray and/or glitter spray are included in any hair service (at $23 a cut). Best of all, everyone in the family is welcome to get their hair cut at Melonhead, so even parents can come in for a new ‘do!

Although South Trail Crossing Barbershop doesn’t have fancy chairs or bubbles, they do have a phenomenal staff that will keep all the fellas in the family coming back for future cuts. Their consistently positive reviews about the professional staff and fun atmosphere (each station has a TV and there are even iPads and a foosball table in the waiting area) should tell you something about the quality of experience you can expect at this barbershop. If your little man is looking for a fun fade (Batman symbol shaved on the side of your head, anyone?) this is definitely the shop you’ll want to visit! The treat bags at the end of their service will be the cherry on top of an awesome cut.
Denim and Smith Barbershops (Silverado Location)

Denim and Smith has 15 locations throughout Calgary, but their Silverado location comes highly recommended by many. While it isn’t a kid-specific salon, the TVs playing sports and the promise of a lollipop at the end of the cut makes it an experience both little guys and older teens will enjoy. A cut for boys aged 0-11 is $21, and a basic cut for older boys is $27. The cool atmosphere and cuts by the owner, Rami, come with glowing reviews.
