One thing many moms want on Mother’s Day is a break from decision making.
So, we’ve rounded up some fun activities happening in the Ottawa area for families this weekend so you don’t even have to think about where to go or what to do.
A few tried-and-true ideas might be to take mom out for brunch with the kids, enjoy a buffet dinner (like this one at Taj Indian Cuisine), or maybe plan to get outside and enjoy a family bike ride. For some other great options, check out these unique, fun, family-friendly ideas.
Check Out the Farmers’ Market
Pick out fresh ingredients for the delicious Mother’s Day meal you have planned, or just find a few favourite bites and goodies that everyone can indulge in. You might discover an artisan that makes a unique item and you can find a great gift at the same time. The Lansdowne Farmers’ Market is a great place to go on Sunday between 10 am and 3 pm. Be sure to leave time to explore the Lansdowne area when you’re done.
Step Back in Time
Enjoy learning about life on the farm on May 12 at the Cumberland Heritage Village Museum. Their new dairy exhibit is opening that day. Pack up the family and explore this new permanent exhibit about our local dairy farming history. You’ll enjoy the grounds and the time outside together.
Head to the Art Gallery
The National Gallery of Canada will appeal to mom’s love of art and history. You can RSVP for a gourmet meal at the gallery’s restaurant, or simply enjoy the exhibits. Plus, on Sundays, there’s also Artissimo for art-making workshops that the kids will love.
And for more art inspiration, check out the Ottawa Art Gallery. Also on Sundays, families are welcome to explore and create during their free Creative Sundays programming.
Mother’s Day weekend always coincides with Ottawa Comiccon and if you (or the mom you’re celebrating) are a fan of fantasy, sci-fi, horror, comics and more, this is the event to be at. There are a variety of activities happening throughout the weekend, plus you can take part in a special photo op! This is a ticketed event.
Step back in time and head to the Diefenbunker. Moms accompanying their children (of any age) receive free admission to The Diefenbunker on Sunday, May 12th. Tea and cookies will be served and the kids can make retro-themed cards for mom! In addition, your family can participate in a scavenger hunt.
Visit the Tulip Festival
Head outside and enjoy everything Mother Nature has to offer at the Ottawa Tulip Festival. This beloved Ottawa event runs from May 10 until May 20 and Mother’s Day is the perfect time to stop and smell the flowers, and enjoy the activities. From interactive displays to gorgeous gardens, your family will have plenty to discover.
Make Time for Tea
Indulge in a Kate Spade inspired tea for mom at Vanitea tea room on Somerset. The menu sounds decadent and includes delicious tea options from Sloane Tea, plus everyone will leave with a special Kate Spade gift. This is a truly unique experience.
Celebrate While the Kids Have Fun
Everyone will love attending the Ottawa Children’s Festival on Mother’s Day. Kids will have a blast, and moms can engage with their little ones in unique ways, thanks to the hands-on activities throughout the festival grounds. Plus, you’re going to LOVE how tired the kids will be after a day of festival fun!
