8 Fun Mother’s Day Activities in Ottawa

If you’re planning Mother’s Day for your partner, here’s a hint: Don’t ask her what she wants to do that day. One thing many moms want a break from is decision making.

Be the ultimate Mother’s Day hero by having an agenda of fun activities ready to go, just don’t forget to let her sleep in. A few ideas might be to take mom out for brunch with the kids, or maybe plan to get outside and enjoy a family bike ride. No matter what you decide to do, you’ll help make her day special by being together – or giving her time to herself if she prefers – and by giving her the gift of no decision making. We’ve rounded up some fun activities happening in the Ottawa area that families can enjoy with mom this weekend so you don’t even have to worry about where to go.

Take her to the Farmers’ Market

You can pick out fresh ingredients for the delicious meal you want to make her, or just find a few favourite bites and goodies that everyone can indulge in. She may discover an artisan that makes a unique item and you can find your gift at the same time. Check out the Log Farm Farmers’ Market opening on May 12 (the kids will love the space too) or the outdoor Lansdowne Farmers’ Market on Sunday between 10 am and 3 pm. Be sure to leave time to explore the Lansdowne area when you are done.

Step back in time

It’s opening Day on May 12 at the Cumberland Heritage Village Museum. Pack up the family and explore the Families in Flux special day (which also serves as the museum’s official opening day of the season) as you learn about changing family dynamics through history, create your own family tree and of course enjoy the farm animals.

Head to the Art Gallery

The National Gallery of Canada will appeal to mom’s love of art and history. Visit the new exhibits like The Extended Moment: Fifty Years of Collecting Photographs, and stop by the kids programming. Artissimo for art making workshops including a special opportunity to create a window bouquet with pressed flowers just for mom.

Get your game face on

The House of Targ is welcoming families to their Mother’s Day brunch event. From 11 am until 2 pm, this first-come, first-serve brunch for families has a twist: All you can play arcade games. This is a the perfect outing for gaming families. Try to beat mom at Excite Bike or Pac Man!

Go underground

Step back in time and head to the Diefenbunker. Moms accompanying their children (of any age) receive free admission to The Diefenbunker on May 12 and 13. Coffee and tea will be served and the kids can make retro-themed cards for mom! Space is limited.

Visit the Tulip Festival

Head outside and enjoy everything Mother Nature has to offer at the Ottawa Tulip Festival. This beloved Ottawa event runs from May 11 until May 21 and Mother’s Day is the perfect time to stop and smell the flowers, and to enjoy the activities. From interactive displays to gorgeous gardens,  your family will have plenty to discover.

Take in the ballet

Les Petite Ballets is performing Peter Pan at Centrepointe Theatre on May 12. There are two showtimes available. Your family will enjoy this interpretation of a classic story through a colourful, musical performance full of movement.

Go to the birds

It’s World Migratory Bird Day on May 12 (and 2018 is the year of the bird!) and the Ottawa Children’s Festival will be hosting related Bird Day activities between 11 am and 2 pm, plus your family will enjoy the other free activities happening at the festival all weekend long.
