They Aren’t Married Yet, But I Can’t Help But Be Excited for Another Royal Baby
I have to admit, I love seeing and reading about all things Royal Family. As the days lead up to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s May 19th wedding ceremony, I am almost as excited as if it were MY own wedding. I love photos of royal children, and especially love reading about some of the parenting techniques, like active listening that Kate Middleton and Prince William practice in their family. I can’t wait to see Markle’s wedding dress. I can’t wait to see their first kiss as husband and wife.
I also really can’t wait until they announce they are pregnant. There I said it. I do hate myself just a little bit for already being on Royal Baby Bump Watch. I realize there is something unseemly about waiting and watching and caring so much and guessing whether famous people are pregnant – I mean, poor Jennifer Aniston having to go through this for more than a decade – and wondering if they just had a big meal or if they may, in fact, be pregnant and starting to show.
Markle is 36 years old, so, depending on how many children they decide they want, she probably should start sooner than later. That being said, many people are having children in their 40s, like me, so she has time!
One of The Sun’s article in the U.K most recent headlines began with the question, ‘When Will Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have their first baby? Latest predictions and betting odds on another royal pregnancy,’ with the subtext, ‘The wedding is just a couple of weeks away, and already fans are eager for the couple to have another royal baby.’
So, obviously, I’m not alone in getting caught up in the excitement. (I hate to say it, but maybe she already IS pregnant? Maybe they are already in the process of adoption? I really don’t know the ins and outs of the protocol of royal families, but Prince Harry and Markle have definitely already modernized the monarchy, so anything is possible!)
According to the article, Prince William and Kate Middleton, who tied the knot in April 2011 announced their first pregnancy 20 months after they tied the knot. Middleton was 29 years-old when she got married and 31 when she had her first child, Prince George, in July 2013, 27 months after saying ‘I do.’ The article also mentions Markle’s age, ‘sparing rumours that hey may have a baby sooner rather than later, following the wedding.’
Although I feel a little odd about being so excited for someone I don’t know potentially getting knocked up, and feel kind of bad for contributing to the pressure of them having kids, it’s not like they haven’t mentioned having children before in interviews. In their engagement interview last year, they were asked about plans for parenthood. ‘One step at a time, and hopefully we’ll start a family in the near future.’
Even before he met Markle, Prince Harry told Today, ‘Of course I’d love to have kids right now, but there’s a process that one has to go through…it would be great to have someone else next to me to share the pressure.’ You think?
And it’s crystal clear they adore children. Their wedding party will feature a group of ten children as bridesmaids and page boys. Prince George, 4, and Princess Charlotte, 3. Harry’s royal nephew and niece will reprise their roles from their aunt Pippa Middleton’s wedding last May (I also adore Pregnant Pippa and can’t wait until she gives birth!) The others? Miss Florence van Cutsem, 3, daughter of Alice van Cutsem and Major Nicholas van Cutsem, and a goddaughter of Harry.

Why else am I excited to watch their wedding? Because of the Canadian component, of course! Ivy Mulroney, 4, the daughter of Jessica and Ben Mulroney, son of former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, will be a bridesmaid, and their twin sons, Brian and John, 7, will be also be page boys. I mean, come on! How CUTE is this wedding going to be?
(I interviewed Jessica Mulroney in 2011. For an inside peek, when her twins were 7 months old, click here. We talk about lingerie!)
I can’t even imagine what it would be like to have the pressure this Royal Couple has, to get married in front of an estimated BILLION people, many of whom, like me, not only love all things Royal but are on the lookout for the first signs of a baby bump in the future.
So, even though they’re not married yet, I can’t help but be excited for them and what their future holds. Make that, I’m royally excited!
(And don’t even get me started on possible baby names!)
