Back to (Halloween) Basics PENDING

OK, Halloween is not considered an official national holiday, but ask any kid what the most important days of the year are, and we can bet Halloween is one of them!
Lots of candy, lots of excitement and LOTS more decorating than we remember when we were kids. We’re wondering, though, about all this décor excess. Is it really necessary to decorate the front lawn like a graveyard?

What ever happened to the good old Jack o’Lantern?

Time to bring back “Jack the Lad”, but get him in the full holiday spirit with a new face this year. Go back to basics and impress your neighbours (and your kids) with your artistic carving ability – even if you have to cheat (just a little) with a carving template.

Yes Virginia, there are sites like www.jack-o-lantern.com that will provide you with patterns so you can carve your pumpkin to perfection whether you prefer spooky (we like the Evil Eye) or funny (try the Pumpkin ‘Pi’ for the math whiz in the family). The ambitious carver can even try their full wrap-around designs.

If you like friendlier faces (Blue, Hello Kitty, Sponge Bob and Scooby Doo to be specific), try DLTK’s Crafts for Kids.

For designer elegance (and a fantastic witch), try HGTV’s printable pumpkin patterns.

Happy carving (and don’t forget to keep the good chocolate for yourself).
