Mysterious Mice: The Easiest Indoor Halloween Decoration You Can Make
My kids have always been into Halloween. From homemade costumes to the freaky feast I serve before we head out to trick or treat, it’€™s definite the one occasion where we’€™re all equally enthusiastic.
Last year, I showed you one of the easiest Halloween decorations you can make for your front door, and today I’€™m going to share how I jazz up the inside of our house in a similar way.
A few years ago I noticed Martha Stewart was selling sets of black cardstock mice along with a few mouse holes. I thought the idea was fantastic and set out to make my own, less expensive version. Here’€™s how to make your own collection of mysterious mice to add a little frightening festivity to your home this Halloween:
- Find a mouse template online (for variation, use a few different shaped mice templates) and print the one you like onto a piece of cardstock.
- Cut out the shape using a craft knife or sharp scissors.
- Trace the mouse onto thick black paper (like Bristol board) as many times as you like.
- Cut the mice from the paper.
- Cut mouse holes (you can draw these freehand, or find an online template if you prefer) from the same black paper.
- Affix to the back of stairs or along walls and baseboards using double-sided tape.
The mice in the photo have been used for four years now, and not unlike the bats, I carefully remove the tape from the back of the pieces of paper and store them in a tissue-lined box until the next Halloween. This project has always been something I’€™ve worked on with my kids, and they’€™ve been able to assist with everything from choosing the mice and tracing the shapes to sticking them to the back of the stairs. I use the craft knife to cut out the shapes because it is a little finicky but older kids could probably manage that on their own.
How are you spookifying your house for Halloween this year?
